Volunteering with ARCHELON on sea turtle conservation has been an incredible experience. I'd like to share some transferable skills I developed during my month in Crete.
🗣 Effective Communication
Working with a team of international volunteers, most of whom were non-native English speakers, honed my communication skills. Clear, thoughtful communication was crucial for efficiency and precision. I learned to pause and think before speaking to ensure clarity and quality in my delivery. I also adapted my communication style when engaging with tourists in public awareness, tailoring my message and tone to match their interest level, age, and language proficiency. Presenting a slideshow to an amphitheatre of French children under 10 required a completely different approach to a restaurant full of British adults! I also discovered that many language barriers can be overcome with a friendly smile, gesticulation, and laughter.
💪 Reliability and Resilience
Sleeping on the floor in a tent for a month in 35-degree heat was challenging — not to mention the erratic sleep schedule, with a 1 a.m. bedtime one night and a 4 a.m. alarm the next! Despite the physical demands, I had to be responsible for my shifts. As a monitoring shift leader, I needed to arrive early (before 5 a.m.) to ensure all equipment was prepared, then lead the team for up to 8.5 hours on the beach. Our work often involved digging up to 0.5m deep using our hands to locate nests or construct shading. Upon return, our shift wasn't complete until we had manually entered our data. Each nest required data updates in several different files, so I had to be meticulous to ensure updates were consistent and complete. Attention to detail was vital!
When leading public awareness shifts, it was important to maintain a friendly, approachable demeanor through my body language. I learned to stay positive and engaged, even during shifts lasting up to 5 hours, to ensure an informative experience for tourists.
🌱 Personal Growth
Travelling solo and living in a foreign country required a significant leap of faith. Challenging myself to step into the unknown has greatly increased my confidence.
I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to help protect such fascinating reptiles and to forge friendships with wonderful people from around the world.
