Our Biodiversity & Rehabilitation Supervisor, Anastasia Galatsianou, and Gerasimos Monokrousos, Senior Communications & Regional Affairs Manager, participated in a roundtable organized by SOFTONE GLOBAL SUSTAIN, focusing on the protection, management, and restoration of #biodiversity. Anastasia and Gerasimos presented our Biodiversity Management Plan, aiming to protect local ecosystems by minimizing environmental impacts and creating conservation zones. They highlighted that #Skouries, one of the most modern #mines in Europe, which is expected to commence commercial operation by late 2025, will implement best environmental practices and technologies and will produce not only #gold but also #copper, a #criticalmetal for the #energytransition towards a low- or zero-emission economy—an essential step in reversing the climate crisis. Employee #training programs and awareness campaigns, play a pivotal role in enhancing our people’s understanding and sensitivity toward biodiversity. Our Environmental Manager, Emmy Gazea, and Rehabilitation Supervisor, Anastasia Galatsianou, had the privilege of presenting at ICARD 2024 - Halifax - International Conference on Acid Rock Drainage, shedding light on critical aspects of #mitigation measures and environmental monitoring in #mining. Emmy and Anastasia presented the cleaning and restoration of the Olympias Old Tailings Management Facility in Halkidiki, Greece, a major ongoing project which contributes to the final and permanent restoration of any impacts created from the historical mining operations of former site owners, and its return to the local community. Moreover, they presented the Kassandra Mines Environmental Monitoring Program, an innovative initiative developed to communicate environmental data to the public in the context of transparency and legislative compliance, as well as a useful tool in stakeholder management.
