Mobile Info Team
International Affairs
Legal assistance for refugees and asylum seekers in Greece.
Σχετικά με εμάς
Mobile Info Team (MIT) seeks to empower the people caught in and around an inefficient, ineffective, and unjust asylum system. Through making the complexities of seeking asylum more understandable, we aim to improve the lives of refugees and to promote rights and dignity in refuge. Our information is designed to give asylum seekers a decent grasp of what they have to do next, whatever their situation, and in doing so, help them reclaim a measure of control and self-determination. Communication with asylum seeker communities is what sets MIT apart. We give information through personal visits, telephone, WhatsApp, and social media, in both one-on-one assistance and general updates. This engagement has helped to dispel rumors, avoid confusion, increase the understanding of asylum procedures, and has resulted in successful asylum and family reunification applications and won the organization trust in key communities. As we move forward, MIT aims to impact asylum systems in research, viable solutions to key issues, and engagement in advocacy for reform and improvement. Everyone has a right to life, security, and dignity, and asylum seekers must have access to fair, just, and empowering refuge. This is the only acceptable response to persecution.

📢 Lack of maintenance of facilities is a recurrent issue across the camps in the Greek mainland. This has led to reduced capacities as many containers have become unlivable. Dilapidated containers are still used, with 72% of respondents reporting inadequate conditions. / Issues commonly reported were: 🔴Dysfunctional air conditioning and heating units 🔴Broken showers and lighting 🔴Extensive mould 🔴Bed bug and cockroach infestations 🔴Large holes in ceilings and floors leading to flooding 🔴Lack of basic items such as bedding and mattresses / In one camp - Corinth - residents live in large shared tents divided into rooms by thin plasterboard walls. These conditions are entirely unsuitable for the dignified accommodation of asylum seekers and are in contravention of EU law.

📣With Equal Legal Aid and Mobile Info Team we present evidence to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on their review of the implementation of the M.S.S. v. Belgium and Greece and Rahimi v. Greece cases. ❌The implementation of both rulings has been pending for 13 years. To date, the Greek state has failed to comply with the decisions. 📄We present evidence on access to asylum procedures, legal assistance, living conditions of asylum seekers, safeguards for vulnerable individuals, and the conditions of detention in mainland facilities and in the #Samos CCAC. We call on the Committee of Minister to examine the cases on an annual basis, and urge Greece to ensure the respect of asylum seekers’: ✅dignified living conditions with sufficient access to food, water, hygiene items, adequate medical and psychological care ✅ access to legal information and assistance ✅ access to systematic and efficient vulnerability assessments ✅effective remedies. 🚨Unlawful detention practice systemically persist across Greece, and the conditions of detention are highly concerning. We ask the Committee of Ministers to make sure Greece ceases their unlawful regime of de facto detention and uses detention only as a last resort. https://lnkd.in/dh-4h6bD

📢 Since July 2021, cash assistance is only provided to asylum seekers who can prove their continuous stay in a state-run camp. Cash assistance is also reduced due to the provision of food to camp residents. 🔴€75 a month for single people 🔴€210 for families of four or more / 93% of respondents stated the amount was insufficient to cover their basic needs. Interruptions and delays were frequently reported, including cases where cash assistance wasn't provided for up to two months. “For the first two months they did not give us any money." / Due to the remote location of camps, more money is required to travel to cities to access essential services and non-food items not provided in the camps. People look for jobs to subsidise their needs, but sometimes can’t find employment due to living far away and general discrimination.

📢 Camps in Greece were initially more open in 2016, but now resemble prison-like facilities for processing new arrivals. These have become notorious in the Aegean islands, known as Closed Controlled Access Centres. Work to similarly transform mainland camps is well underway. / Contracts between the Ministry of Migration and Asylum and the private company Space Hellas indicate 'upgrades' include the use of: 🔴Behavioural analysis surveillance systems 🔴Entry-exit systems 🔴Use of drones for surveillance / The shift to carceral structures began around 2021, when residents in several camps woke up to fences and walls around them which seemed to have started being constructed overnight.
