REFUGYM facilitates exercises classes with and for the residents of a refugee camp in Attica, Greece. Promoting community led sports, REFUGYM supports the asylum seeking community to address their physical and mental health needs through movement and exercise. REFUGYM was founded in 2018, in response to the unaddressed physical and mental health needs of people seeking asylum in Greece. We run exercise classes within a refugee camp located North of Athens. REFUGYM is by refugees, for refugees. We encourage the community to use their skills, passion and knowledge of sports to help their community. One of the top priorities of REFUGYM was to make its programming sustainable; moving away from a reliance on international volunteers and instead empowering camp residents to use their skills and knowledge to help lead the community. We continuously welcome new people from the refugee community to use their passion and expertise in sports activities to lead REFUGYM programming.

Reflections on our full day women's climbing trip. Thank you Joanna Newton
Last week our Engineering Director, Joanna Newton, coached a full-day women-only climbing workshop at a Refugee camp just outside Athens in Greece. REFUGYM, an non-governmental organisation (NGO), is working with refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq and Eritrea. "Some of the women have been at the camp for 5 years, with little privacy and no women-only space. It was a real joy to take these 23 women and teenagers into the mountains amongst the trees, flowers and birdsong, and to hear their laughter and shouts of encouragement to each other across the language barriers. I set up a couple of top-ropes at a crag above the camp and everyone had a go at climbing and belaying, all for the first time. Although some were scared, no one held back and the smiles in the group photo at the end showed how much everyone had enjoyed the experience and the space away from the camp. Refugym is doing superb work, so please do google them and think about supporting." Jo Newton, Engineering Director at ReVentas
Fundraiser announcement: We are celebrating 5 years of #grassroots #community building: fostering nurturing relationships, building leadership skills, and addressing mental health hardships through the implementation of sports and exercise programming, led by and for the refugee camp community. This fundraiser will enable us to: upgrade some equipment, replace broken windows, finish painting the space and install storage space for the equipment. ✨Click below to learn more & donate: https://bit.ly/47sGT7G The photos provide a glimpse into the community we've co-created within the #refugee camp, you can also see the space we wish to renovate. We invite you to contribute to our winter fundraiser to repair and liven up our community gym space. As with everything we've done in the past five years, we can't do this without your support. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) - "This report builds on an existing body of accounts of violence and pushbacks at Greece’s borders, and highlights the physical and psychological suffering, as well as the life-threatening risks, endured by those seeking safety and protection in Greece. Despite calls for more accountability, no efficient, transparent and independent accountability mechanisms have been put in place to reduce the occurrences and impacts of pushbacks. Furthermore, despite extensive documentation and reporting of violent pushback practices at both land and sea borders by civil society, European Parliament, Council of Europe, UNHCR, OHCHR, the Greek Ombudsman and most recently the Greek National Commission for Human Rights, there is a striking and longstanding lack of accountability at Greek and European level." https://lnkd.in/dsAwXSiw
