Georgios Theodoridis from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece presented a talk entitled "Analyte Identification in Untargeted Analysis: Chromatography Matters" at #ISC2024 which discussed the challenges of analyte identification in untargeted analysis, highlighting its significance in metabolomics and non-target screening. Theodoridis highlighted the identification process is often prone to errors, requiring skilled researchers and robust IT tools, which may not always be available, and leads to critical mistakes, according to Theodoridis, and especially with liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. Accurate identification is vital he stressed, because errors can invalidate biochemical interpretations and hinder biomarker discovery. He highlighted two common error types —biologically implausible identities and those inconsistent with chromatographic data — and proposed measures to enhance the situation, particularly by raising awareness of the problem and effective use of chromatographic data.
