In 2022, 129 000 women were newly diagnosed with breast cancer in Africa and about half of them died (64,000). While the five years survival rates for women affected by breast cancer exceeds 90% in high-income countries, in India, only 66% survive and this rate is even lower in South Africa, 40%. Overall, in Africa, less than 1 in 2 women survive three years after diagnosis (WHO). We need to promote awareness and healthy lifestyles, early detection, timely diagnosis and comprehensive breast cancer management, to reduce the 60-70% late diagnosis and poor survival rates. Above all, we need people centered care. We require more attention to, research on and resources toward women’s health. #breastcancer #universalhealthcoverage #AfricaBreastCancerCouncil
