【COP16】The 16th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16 Colombia) in Cali, Colombia, concluded with a mix of achievements and setbacks. Notably, Kitty Tam, our programme lead, attended to COP16 and gathered valuable insights. Here are the key takeaways and implications for Hong Kong: 📌 Key Highlights: (1) Funding Challenges: Negotiations for broader biodiversity funding stalled, putting $20 billion annual commitments from developed nations in jeopardy. (2) Cali Fund: A new fund established to share revenue from digital sequence information (DSI) with indigenous communities. (3) New Permanent Body for Indigenous Peoples: Created to a permanent subsidiary body on Indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) under the CBD. (4) Mainstreaming Champions Group Formed: A coalition aimed at ensuring that biodiversity is considered in any policies and practices that could have a negative effect on it. 📌 Future Path for Hong Kong: (1) Update Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (BSAP): Must align with global targets and incorporate biodiversity into all government decisions. (2) Marine Spatial Planning: Need for a science-based approach to manage marine resources effectively. (3) Urban Parks Enhancement: Opportunity to boost biodiversity and provide climate mitigation and adaptation benefits in urban parks through embracing native species and urban farming. (4) Investing Nature: Explore sustainable financing models like blended finance to support nature-based solutions, such as ecotourism projects. (5) Whole-of-Society’ Approach: Essential for businesses, civil society, and communities to adopt sustainable practices and embed biodiversity into local identity. (6) Education Initiatives: Promoting sustainable consumption among consumers. With strong political will, Hong Kong can lead in biodiversity efforts and create a sustainable future.
