【Oxfam Trailwalker 2024: Veteran Runner Jeff Campbell Shares His Experiences with SCMP】 Jeff Campbell, a veteran runner from Canada, was recently interviewed by South China Morning Post SCMP to share his experiences with the Oxfam Trailwalker and his aspirations for this year's event. Jeff, a 42-year-old lawyer, relocated to Hong Kong ten years ago to stay closer to his wife’s family. Since then, he has become deeply involved in the trail-running community and has explored the stunning trail systems in Hong Kong. Jeff clinched his first victory in the Trailwalker men's event in 2018 and followed it up with wins in the men's event in 2021 and the mixed-team event in 2022, setting a record time of 12 hours and one minute in 2022. This year, as he prepares for his fourth appearance at the Oxfam Trailwalker, Jeff aims to reclaim victory in the 100km race, targeting a pace of 11 hours and 30 to 45 minutes. 【Breaking Records at the 11th Oxfam TowerRun】 The 11th Oxfam TowerRun at Macau Tower brought together over 400 people, including local and overseas participants, on 20 October, all united in raising funds to support left-behind children in Guizhou, Gansu, and Shaanxi. This year was especially exciting as we celebrated three new records at this remarkable fundraising sports event: 🏆Men’s Elite Full Tower Race Champion: Wai Ching Soh, finishing in 6 minutes and 33 seconds. 🏆Women’s Elite Full Tower Race Champion: Qinghua Le, clocking in at 9 minutes and 1 second. 🏆Women’s Half Tower Race Champion: Tan Michele Bee Kiang with an impressive time of 5 minutes and 8 seconds. For the second consecutive year, the Oxfam TowerRun has achieved international recognition as a qualified tower running competition. Oxfam’s Response to the 2024 Policy Address Regarding the third Policy Address, Oxfam Hong Kong is pleased to note that the government has incorporated some recommendations previously presented by us. However, there remains significant room for improvement in addressing the issue of poverty. Ms Kalina Tsang, Director General of Oxfam Hong Kong said, “As the challenge of an ageing population intensifies, Oxfam Hong Kong welcomes the government's adoption of our earlier policy proposals aimed at activating the economically inactive workforce. Oxfam Hong Kong released its "Hong Kong Poverty Report 2024" today, analysed data from the Census and Statistics Department. It found that the overall poverty rate in Hong Kong reached 20.2% with over 1.39 million people living in poverty. The wealth gap has widened from 34.3 times in 2019 to 81.9 times this year. In Hong Kong, the number of elderly people aged 65 or above living in poverty has exceeded 580,000, representing a significant increase from 42.9% compared to 2019. Oxfam Hong Kong proposed several suggestions, calling for the government and various sectors to work together hand in hand. 1. Achieve target poverty alleviation below the poverty line by including "Enabling" and "Active Ageing" targets 2. Support impactful social innovation projects by encouraging collaboration among government, businesses, and NGOs 3. Promote active ageing 4. Create flexible job opportunities to enhance social well-being 5. Improve childcare services to enable economically inactive women to join the workforce 6.
