Oxfam Hong Kong released its "Hong Kong Poverty Report 2024" today, analysed data from the Census and Statistics Department. It found that the overall poverty rate in Hong Kong reached 20.2% with over 1.39 million people living in poverty. The wealth gap has widened from 34.3 times in 2019 to 81.9 times this year. In Hong Kong, the number of elderly people aged 65 or above living in poverty has exceeded 580,000, representing a significant increase from 42.9% compared to 2019. Oxfam Hong Kong proposed several suggestions, calling for the government and various sectors to work together hand in hand. 1. Achieve target poverty alleviation below the poverty line by including "Enabling" and "Active Ageing" targets 2. Support impactful social innovation projects by encouraging collaboration among government, businesses, and NGOs 3. Promote active ageing 4. Create flexible job opportunities to enhance social well-being 5. Improve childcare services to enable economically inactive women to join the workforce 6. Promote a living wage to enhance social mobility Full report from Oxfam Hong Kong: https://bit.ly/4dwgRDe Donate Now: https://lnkd.in/gv3gy9e9 #OxfamHongKong #樂施會 #povertyreport #wealthgap #elderly #activegeing

Crisis in Lebanon: A Call for Urgent Action The ongoing war in Gaza is spilling over into Lebanon, leaving civilians in dire conditions. Thousands are forced into overcrowded shelters with dwindling resources—food, water, and medicine are rapidly running out. In Gaza and Lebanon, more than 40,000 people have been killed, a third of them children. With over 1,000 lives lost in Lebanon since last October, the urgency for a ceasefire is undeniable. Oxfam is on the ground, providing critical support to those affected by this humanitarian crisis. We must amplify our efforts to assist the internally displaced people and ensure their basic needs are met. Join us in advocating for peace and supporting those in need. [Manila typhoon] On 24 July, the Philippines was severely affected by super typhoon "Gaemi," which unleashed heavy rainfall across the capital city of Manila. This resulted in devastating flooding and landslides, prompting the declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of all offices and schools in Manila. The flooding has profoundly impacted over 1.5 million individuals, displacing nearly 200,000 families. In the hardest-hit areas, communities are currently grappling with acute shortages of food and clean water, while their homes and essential infrastructure lie in ruins. Oxfam swiftly launched emergency relief efforts in the severely impacted impoverished areas of Manila in collaboration with local partners. The aim was to assist 4,400 disaster victims in purchasing food, nutritious items, or everyday necessities and to support the rebuilding of their livelihoods. Emergency cash assistance enabled 500 affected families to buy food, assisted 100 households with pregnant women, infants, or individuals with disabilities in acquiring nutritious food and daily necessities, supported 200 vendors in restoring their businesses impacted by the typhoon, and provided for 100 community volunteers to help clean up debris and waste in the disaster-stricken areas, thereby assisting vulnerable groups within the community. Oxfam Introduces Wearable Heat Stroke Detection System to Improve Climate Adaptability for Outdoor Cleaners in Hong Kong Check out the latest piece published in the South China Morning Post (SCMP) about Oxfam Hong Kong's efforts to better protect outdoor cleaners from heatstroke. Oxfam Hong Kong has collaborated with LinkAIQ, a health tech start-up introduced by Cyberport, to develop a wearable heat stroke detection system utilizing a smartwatch to send real-time territory-wide heat stress at work warnings issued by the Hong Kong Observatory and Oxfam’s local warnings. “We hope to expand the project and have been in discussion with other charities and organisations,” said Wong Shek-hung, Oxfam’s director of the Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan programme. 【Climate Change】Oxfam Introduces Wearable Heat Stroke Detection System to Improve Climate Adaptability for Outdoor Cleaners in Hong Kong Hong Kong Outdoor cleaners face significant heat stroke risks while working in these extreme temperatures. In response, the government launched the revised “Guidance Notes on Prevention of Heat Stroke at Work” (Guidance Notes) last May and issued the “Heat Stress at Work Warning”. However, these measures have not effectively reduced the risk for outdoor cleaners. To address this ongoing challenge, Oxfam Hong Kong has collaborated with LinkAIQ, a health tech start-up introduced by Cyberport, to develop a wearable heat stroke detection system. The system utilises a smartwatch to send real-time territory-wide heat stress at work warnings issued by the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) and Oxfam’s local warnings. Outdoor cleaners can receive warning signals directly through the watch, reminding them to take necessary breaks in high-heat environments. In addition, the smartwatch monitors vital health parameters, enabling cleaners to keep track of their physical condition and raising awareness about heat stroke prevention. To gather local heat stress data, the Oxfam team set up Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) devices in North districts, Tsuen Wan and Kwun Tong.  These devices were placed in open, well-ventilated outdoor locations to simulate the actual working environments of outdoor cleaners. During the 28 days of effective testing, there were 16 days where the North district’s heat index triggered more hours of heat stress warning compared to the HKO’s record. While the North District’s index reached the red Heat Stress at Work Warning level for 16 days and half of them even reached the black Heat Stress at Work Warning level. This indicates that workers in that area faced significantly higher heat stress than the HKO's territory-wide index suggested. Our team also distributed smartwatches to approximately 300 outdoor cleaning workers. Nearly all interviewees agreed smart watches were faster and more convenient than phones for receiving heat alerts and weather updates. Overall, most cleaners decided that the heat stress smart watches improved their heat awareness and reminded them to rest and stay hydrated, helping them prevent heat stroke.
