The World Health Organization (WHO) launched the One Health challenge, an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance the health of people, animals, and ecosystems. 🌍🧑⚕️ AI can contribute to One Health by accelerating the understanding of the causes and finding possible solutions to health problems affecting species, ecosystems, and humans. Even though a research agenda on the use of AI to achieve One Health goals is still far from being completed, several independent researchers are investigating how it can speed up progress. A recent Italian study implementing and training AI algorithms highlighted that the environment plays a much bigger role in cancer diseases than we thought. Another study analyzed – thanks to specific algorithms – the effects of environmental pollution on Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and autism. 🧠🌿 These are enormous advances in knowledge with clear implications for One Health that would have been incredibly slow without AI technologies and a multidisciplinary approach to research. In an era where the time to fix the damages done in the past is limited, AI could represent the only chance to accelerate innovation and identify lean solutions that benefit all species and the Earth's ecosystems in the long term. 🌟🌳 Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/dt5dAZfY #AI2MED #onehealth #AI #innovation #ecosystem #globalhealth Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II Sveučilište Algebra Università di Pavia Griffith College Dublin Smion Solvership Univerzitet Crne Gore Kelyon Jozef Stefan Institute Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)

AI Revolutionizing Longevity The science of #angeg is undergoing a transformative shift, driven by #AI and its profound impact on biomedical research. Ageing is influenced by genetics, #lifestyle, environment, and access to #healthcare, but AI is unlocking new possibilities for understanding and combating age-related decline. By distinguishing between #lifespan (years we live) and #healthspan (the quality of those years), we can aim for longer, healthier lives. AI accelerates research by analyzing vast datasets from genomics and proteomics to uncover #biomarkers of ageing. It has revolutionized drug discovery, pinpointing compounds that target ageing pathways and is transforming #personalized medicine. With predictive analytics, AI forecasts disease risks and recommends tailored interventions, ensuring health strategies align with individual profiles. In diagnostics, AI detects early signs of #diseases through imaging tools and wearable technology, enabling timely interventions. It also supports lifestyle optimization, offering insights into diet, exercise, sleep, and stress management to enhance both healthspan and lifespan. Moreover, AI is indispensable in tackling age-related diseases, advancing treatments for conditions like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and cancer. Yet challenges remain, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, and accessibility. Ageing is a complex, systemic process, but AI's modelling capabilities help integrate diverse mechanisms, offering a holistic understanding. The goal isn't just to extend life but to improve its quality, redefining ageing in the 21st century. Artificial intelligence is changing the game in healthcare, making it possible to diagnose even the rarest genetic disorders in record time ⏱️🧬. A recent breakthrough by George X. Ye and his team shows how AI-assisted rapid whole-genome sequencing (rWGS) gave hope to a six-month-old patient with a rare and life-threatening condition called infantile hyaline fibromatosis (HFS). 💡Using the Fabric GEM® platform, clinicians pinpointed the genetic cause of a mutation in the ANTXR2 gene in just five days. Compare that to the months traditional methods can take, often leaving families in doubt. This fast, accurate diagnosis allowed the clinical team to plan care immediately, showing how AI can save lives. 🌟What makes this even more exciting is the broader potential. AI tools like this aren’t just about speed—they are about fairness. They can bring advanced diagnostics to underserved areas, reduce misdiagnoses, and support personalised care for patients who would otherwise face years of uncertainty. This case is proof that AI isn’t just about technology; it’s about people. It’s a step toward ensuring no patient is left without answers. From Biases to Balance: Fairness in AI-Driven Health-Care 🤖⚖️ Bias in AI systems, particularly in healthcare, can lead to significant disparities in treatment and outcomes for different patient groups. Understanding and addressing these biases is crucial to ensure that AI technologies contribute to equitable and effective healthcare delivery. To gain a deeper understanding of this subject, Griffith College Dublin hosted an insightful online webinar as part of the AI2MED project on November 21st. The event was dedicated to exploring the critical intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and healthcare, with a specific focus on addressing biases and achieving balance in AI-driven healthcare solutions. The keynote speaker, Dr. Harut Shahumyan, a renowned expert in data science and Director of Data Science at Optum Ireland, delivered a thought-provoking presentation on the fairness of AI in healthcare outcomes. His discussion underscored the importance of tackling biases inherent in AI systems and presented strategies to mitigate these challenges while maintaining an equilibrium between AI automation and human oversight. Bias in AI and its Impact on Healthcare Delivery 🩺📉 One of the key focus areas of this webinar was to address the important issue of bias in AI and its effects on healthcare delivery. It highlighted data bias, which occurs when certain populations are underrepresented in training datasets, leading to unequal outcomes. The discussion also covered algorithmic bias, where flaws in the design of AI systems can lead to unfair treatment or errors, and user bias, where healthcare professionals may misinterpret AI recommendations based on their assumptions. These biases risk creating inequalities in healthcare, particularly for vulnerable groups and reducing the positive impact AI could have on improving healthcare services. Strategies to Mitigate Bias 🛠️📋 The importance of the collaborative approach to addressing bias in AI systems was taken into account. The need for clear regulations was highlighted to ensure fairness and uphold ethical standards. Together, these efforts aim to align AI to deliver fair and equal healthcare outcomes for all. Future Perspective 🚀🌈 To reduce bias in AI and ensure equitable healthcare, it is essential to invest in diverse datasets, promote explainable AI for transparency, foster collaboration across disciplines, and develop regulatory frameworks that prioritise fairness and equity in AI implementation. The webinar highlighted the AI2MED project's role in fostering dialogue to shape a future of inclusive and accessible healthcare.
