Our latest research article has just been published, focusing on maneuvering simulations of an ONRT surface combatant ship using advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics methods. The study compares the actuator disc model with the partially rotating grid method, offering insights into these approaches' accuracy and computational efficiency in simulating complex maneuvers like turning circle and zig-zag, in calm water and head waves. The partially rotating grid method combines a fully time-resolved approach with dynamic overset grid technology and the multiple reference frames (MRF) approach, integrating the strengths of both methods. The MRF allows for larger time steps, conserving computational resources, while the time-resolved approach provides the time-varying position of propeller blades. This method effectively captures the critical propeller side force, often overlooked in simpler models, resulting in more precise predictions of ship behavior during maneuvers. Some interesting and some expected findings from a parametric CFD optimisation of a round-bilge semi-displacement hull: Expected: Moving the LCB towards amidship lowers resistance at lower speeds, moving it aft lowers resistance for Froude numbers approaching 1.0. Interesting: Deeper transom benefits higher Froude numbers, shallower draft benefits lower Froude numbers. Reducing transom width slightly reduces resistance at high Froude numbers.
