Under its Second Nationally Determined Contribution (#SNDC), Indonesia is working towards substantial carbon emissions reduction to meet the global 1.5°C scenario, aiming for net zero emissions by 2060 or sooner. This comprehensive commitment includes tackling a variety of greenhouse gasses, including CO2, CH4, N2O, and HFCs 🌍 That’s were the #BlueCarbon ecosystems come in! #BlueCarbon ecosystems, such as #mangroves and #seagrasses, are natural carbon sinks. They sequester large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and store it in their biomass and sediments. And that's from the closest major island! 🚤✨ Liukang Tangaya is one of the 13 sub-districts in the Pangkajene dan Kepulauan (Pangkep) Regency, Indonesia. This area is not just any ordinary place. It's a region of immense ecological importance and is recognized as a priority area within the Wallacea region. 💡 Wallacea is a unique biogeographical region encompassing various terrestrial and marine habitats, where an extraordinary percentage of wildlife is endemic, meaning they can’t be found anywhere else. Soo.. Why Liukang Tangaya?🤔 🦈 The waters of Liukang Tangaya are vital for the migration of sharks and turtles, supporting their life cycles and contributing to the region's rich marine biodiversity. 🐟 This area also serves as a prime fishing ground for various species, including snapper, grouper, tuna, and sharks, with abundant catches that support local livelihoods. 💣 Sadly, destructive fishing still exists in the area — tackling it calls for collaborative actions from all the stakeholders involved! Over the last 2 days, we held a Coordination Meeting on Strengthening Regional Fisheries Resources Surveillance! 💪🐟✨ 💡 Provincial and city governments are mandated by law to surveil fisheries, especially the issuance of business permits. 💡 However, several challenges (e.g. limited human resources, institutional and infrastructure capacity; inadequate support in planning to funding) hinder local governments from efficiently carrying out fisheries surveillance authority. Thus, we, together with the Directorate General of Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries - Republic of Indonesia, organized a coordination meeting with the aim of strengthening and facilitating fisheries surveillance at the regional level! #DidYouKnow that the devastating blasts from fish bombs can shatter coral reefs, destroying vital marine habitats in seconds? 💥💣🐟 Fish bombing, which involves the use of explosives, is a type of #DestructiveFishing that can cause extensive damage to marine ecosystems. Over the course of 2017-2022, destructive fishing accounted for 11% of all Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing cases in Indonesia, with a staggering 60% involving the use of explosives or fish bombs. These explosives are traditionally crafted from industrial fertilizers containing harmful ingredients like ammonium nitrate, stuffed into bottles or jerry cans and then connected to a fuse. While effective at capturing fish, the blasts from these bombs can devastate coral reef ecosystems and kill non-target species, resulting in long-term ecological damage. But the impact doesn't stop there. Fish bombs pose severe risks to fishers themselves, as they are often paired with compressor diving, a method where fishers dive without proper equipment. Lack of proper air filters and the risk of barotrauma—resulting in decompression sickness or nitrogen bubbles in the bloodstream—can lead to serious injury, paralysis, or even death. Last week, Indonesia’s #OceanAccounts (OA) Task Force got together for their annual coordination meeting! 🌊✨ Established through a ministerial decree, the Task Force — 5 incredible working groups made of government officials and experts in their fields — carries out an important mission: develop and implement #OceanAccounting in Indonesia. During the meeting, each working group presented updates on their progress over the past year and their plans for the following year. Some highlights: 🌊 In 2025, the Task Force will finalize the Pilot Projects and implement OA outside Marine Protected Areas (#MPA) 🌊 The Task Force excitedly welcomes new partners, World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia and Conservation Strategy Fund Indonesia, in the effort to mainstream OA and engage with provincial governments 🌊 Strengthening cooperation is a must, and the Task Force will also collaborate with even more ministries, institutions, and universities in the coming term Also, welcome on board, Yuliana Syamsuni! 📢 NEW PUBLICATION! 📢 ”Optimising Marine Basic Spatial Units (MBSU) for Ocean Accounting using empirical data from Saleh Bay, Indonesia”!✨ In our recent article published in the journal OneEcosystem, we explore how grid sizes and gridding methods can impact ecosystem extent values, and how they can domino-effect their way into a wider #OceanAccounting and management context. In #OceanAccounts, the MBSU provides a spatial frame of reference to harmonize data across various domains (i.e. environmental, social, economy). Particularly, the operationalization of MBSU will directly affect the ecosystem extent account, which quantifies the total area of each ecosystem asset. Based on the analysis, we found that: 🌐 Different grid sizes and gridding methods would produce different extent (and therefore errors) and accuracy 🌐 Errors can propagate between linked accounts and subsequent management policies, hence choosing an optimal MBSU grid is important 🌐 Choosing grids with less biases and better accuracy would result in trade-offs — they would require higher computing capacity and more processing time 🌐 Countries implementing ocean accounts should take these trade-offs into consideration, as well as their management goals and the ecological specificities in their region Kudos to authors: Agavia Kori Rahayu, Risti Endriani Arhatin, Jordan Gacutan, Firdaus Agung, Jessica Pingkan, Annisya Rosdiana, Irfan Yulianto! This isn’t something we usually post, but let's talk about something equally important to our conservation work — team building! ✨ In the grand scheme of NGOs, our organization, the Fisheries Resource Center of Indonesia (FRCI), is relatively young, having only been established in 2018. Since then, our team has grown massively, now composed of incredibly talented individuals united by a common goal, with each member bringing their unique skills and perspectives to the table. But even the most talented teams need to take time to strengthen their bonds to reach their full potential. So this week, we took a break from our usual routine, ditched our laptops and headed out into the field! (Actually, no. None of us ditched our laptops. The laptops are our fifth limb at this point.) Team building isn't just a fun break from work — it’s a critical investment in our ability to collaborate effectively. A cohesive team is more efficient, resilient, creative, and capable of tackling the unexpected challenges that come our way. Furthermore, let’s not forget that while our work is important to create a sustainable ocean, but so is taking care of the people who carry it out. Stepping away from the desk and into nature allowed us to recharge our minds, refresh our spirits, and strengthen our connections! We are thrilled to announce an exciting new program: Fully-Funded Postgraduate Scholarships in the field of #fisheries! 🌊🐟🎓 In collaboration with Sustainable Fisheries and Communities Trust (SFACT), we are currently funding 5 PhD students in our first batch — hopefully with more batches to come! This program aims to advance practical skills, knowledge, and leadership in sustainable fisheries management. These first batch awardees will be pursuing their studies in Marine Fisheries Technology at IPB University. Notably, they are fisheries managers from the Directorate General of Capture Fisheries of Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries - Republic of Indonesia. Their #research will be directly linked to Indonesian and regional fisheries, with a specific look at the #IndianOcean (which is the area of interest of SFACT), providing invaluable insights and solutions tailored to our local and regional context. The support of SFACT endeavours to address the situation of overfishing in the Indian Ocean in order to protect stocks for the benefit of #Indonesia, its citizens and other coastal states. We hope this process will not only enrich the academic experiences of the enrolled students but also contribute significantly to the #sustainable management of fisheries in Indonesia and wider region! Most people don’t know about Liukang Tangaya Marine Protected Area (#MPA) — yet! 🌊✨ Spanning exactly 505,862.34 hectares, this relatively new MPA in the South Sulawesi Province might be invisible on most maps, but it’s set to play a crucial role in Indonesia’s marine conservation. Liukang Tangaya MPA’s area is unique in that it is located smack-dab in the middle of the ocean, being much closer to West Nusa Tenggara Province than to South Sulawesi. This area is recognized for its high biodiversity and is crucial for the protection and rehabilitation of coastal and marine ecosystems. Designated with the aim of promoting conservation, Liukang Tangaya MPA also holds significant potential as a sustainable tourism destination, offering opportunities for both environmental preservation and local community development. In celebration of the World Mangrove Day, we engaged with young minds through a series of exciting activities focused on blue carbon ecosystems, especially the #mangroves! 🌿✨ During last month’s World Mangrove Day, we came to schools on the coastlines of Central Java to organize programs such as: 📚 Interactive Classes: Students participated in hands-on learning sessions about the ecological importance of mangroves, their role in carbon sequestration, and their contribution to coastal protection, biodiversity, and community livelihood. 🌱 Mangrove Planting: The students had the opportunity to get their hands dirty and plant mangrove seedlings, contributing directly to the conservation and restoration of this crucial ecosystem. 🎨 Painting Competition: To encourage creative expression, we held a painting competition where students showcase their talents, as well as their understanding and appreciation of the mangrove ecosystem. We believe these activities not only provided valuable learning experiences and knowledge, but also empowered the youths to take an active role in environmental conservation! Last but not least, we are grateful to all the schools and community groups who have lent their support.
