In celebration of World Food Day 2024 this week, through the Hai Mnahat initiative, we are committed to raising awareness about the importance of preserving local food wealth to create more sustainable agriculture. Narris Kalle and Trimarisa Dillak highlight how the creation of local, traditional food made with ingredients from local gardens is not only delicious but also rich in nutrients. They invite us to appreciate local food recipes as a step towards protecting the environment and tradition, especially in West Timor. This small yet crucial step ensures the preservation and continuation of local food heritage. Let’s celebrate World Food Day with tangible actions to support sustainable agriculture and safeguard local food treasures! _ The Hai Mnahat initiative is made possible with support from Citi Foundation through the Global Innovation Challenge. #Kopernik #FindingWhatWorks #WorldFoodDay Watch the full video on YouTube below: https://lnkd.in/gGrVpfm9

As part of our efforts to support small-scale fishers and farmers in Papua, our team recently completed the construction of seaweed solar dryers and conducted food processing training on Pai and Meos Manggwandi Islands in Biak Numfor. We worked with 31 seaweed farmers to build six solar dryers on Pai and four on Meos Manggwandi. These solar dryers, made from locally sourced materials and covered with UV plastic, allow farmers to dry seaweed efficiently even in rainy conditions, eliminating concerns about spoilage while they are out fishing. Alongside the construction, we also conducted an experiment comparing the drying performance of the solar dryers against traditional floor drying. This program is made possible with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Japan. Stay tuned for more updates! #Kopernik #FindingWhatWorks #Papua

In East Nusa Tenggara, where 74% of the population lacks reliable electricity, daily life presents significant challenges, particularly for women and girls. The lack of power not only impacts their ability to study or work after dark but also exacerbates period poverty, limiting access to menstrual products, hygiene facilities, and proper education on menstrual health. To address these critical issues, we partnered with Panasonic and Perfect Fit to launch a comprehensive project across Manggarai Barat, Sikka, and Lembata. As part of this initiative, we distributed solar lanterns to provide much-needed light at night, helping households function more effectively after dark. Additionally, we provided reusable menstrual pads and conducted educational outreach on menstrual health, offering a sustainable solution for managing periods in regions where access to single-use products is limited. Our goal is to improve the quality of life for women and girls in East Nusa Tenggara by addressing both the need for reliable lighting and sustainable menstrual health solutions. With over 800 solar lanterns and reusable pads distributed, we are committed to creating a positive, lasting impact in these communities. Thank you to Panasonic and Perfect Fit for making this program possible. #Kopernik #FindingWhatWorks #MenstrualHealth #EastNusaTenggara

Last week, the Kopernik team came together for our Q2 review, reflecting on all our work, achievements, and challenges over the past few months. We had a deep dive session focused on our ongoing research into unmet needs in seaweed farming and strategies to enhance the livelihoods of seaweed farmers in Papua—we look forward to sharing the results in the coming months. We also held a sharing session where K-Team members discussed their participation in the YSEALI program and how it has fueled their passion and work at Kopernik. The day was also filled with learning and great fun, as we were joined by friends from @alamshanti and @helloecogames to test the "Plastic Island" board game, developed in collaboration with the @pulauplastik initiative. The team also participated in a soap-making workshop using a natural material called Tengkawang, which is unique to Kalimantan. This workshop is part of an upcoming project aimed at supporting farming communities in Kalimantan by adding value to their products. It’s been a busy half-year at Kopernik, and we look forward to continuing our work in finding what works in the months ahead!
