AwakenHub reposted this
It's official, I've caught the NYC bug! I managed to have a flying visit with the AwakenHub gang for 22 hours in February and we got some super pitching and networking tips from the great Mary Ann Pierce, and that we the ideal stepping stone for getting myself and others in the AwakenHub group ready for the crazy immersive week that was Digital Irish Irish Startup Week 2024! We're just back from an intense few days which was so much more than a trade mission. I spotted Chris Walla describe it as a mini-accelerator and it really feel like we went through that over the course of last week! Ireland is one of the best places in the world to get your company established, test your product and plan ahead for growth. Enterprise Ireland has been instrumental to this and I want to particularly thank Tom Early, Barry Brennan 💡 Gary Leyden for helping us to refine our pitch at the EI offices in Dublin ahead of our two minute showcase at the Irish Consulate in NYC, and also for supporting the event. If I had to distil it down to two key takeaways for the week, here's what I learned from #ISW2024: 1. The pace and attitude towards business is entirely different in NYC to Europe. Maybe it's an Irish/female/introvert thing, but I can sometimes be hesitant to ask directly, boast on our achievements or to follow up for fear of annoying the person. That is the expectation on the east coast! Leverage your superpower as an early stage startup. Show how proactive you are and how easily you can absorb and react to feedback and opportunities. If someone in a position of power offers to open their phonebook to you, say yes and act fast - as the opportunity may not come up again. Also on sales and raising investment - the fast yes or no is always better than the infinite maybe that you often get here! 2. The generosity of the Irish diaspora at Digital Irish on the east coast is unfounded. I was blown away throughout the week not just with people offering their network like I mentioned earlier, but the time, effort and consideration that went into every moment of the week. Every networking event, every panel, every feedback session was entirely devoted to giving a platform to Irish founders with global ambition - and on a voluntary basis. So a massive thank you to the Digital Irish crew for leading this, including Gene Murphy, Sarah Clarke, Feargall Kenny, Dave Byrne, Marty Loughlin and the many other devotees I got to catch up with or meet during the week! Another aspect that cannot be ignored is the power of a peer network. I can't overstate the benefit of having friendships with other founders - whatever stage or industry they are at! You can find out more about the whole cohort here: https://lnkd.in/eAHEz8KD Finally, I head the pleasure of speaking to Dave Byrne on the Digital Irish podcast before the event, please check it out on Spotify here: https://lnkd.in/ecKEkiP2 Here's to next year! #ISW2024
