Fresco's Global Head of Content, Regan Burns, shares her thoughts on #AI and #Recipes.

Global Head of Content @ Fresco | Content Strategy | Content Transformation | Localization | Generative AI | Content and Data Management

Can content creators and generative AI coexist? 👩💻🤝🤖 NPR put out a story about #GenAi recipes and I have thoughts! 🧐 Articles declaring “Look how crazy/dangerous/disgusting this AI-generated recipe is” have been popular clickbait for years but creators weren’t feeling all that threatened until recently. We all know that #LLMs have gobbled up many recipe developers’ online content to support #generativeai efforts. And the results? While this article cites egregious examples from 2022 and 2023 (which, let’s face it, is like 1823 in AI years) the recipe outputs from some of the most advanced LLMs are not all that bad today. (And by “not that bad,” I mean they work—but usually without the flavor or texture nuance you'd get from a professional human cook.) Here are my thoughts: Thoughtful, reliable, high-quality content is valuable and will continue to be so—no matter where it comes from. I don’t believe we’re close to a time when AI will invent ubiquitous, zeitgeist-y recipes like Marian Burros’ Plum Torte or Alison Roman's “The Stew.” Nor launch a food trend that invades pop culture and makes us eat entire cucumbers until there's a shortage. (Google it!🥒) At the same time, ai-generated recipes are not going away. And while there are plenty of mistakes and errors now, the tech is improving so fast and getting so good, it won’t be long until some AI content is indistinguishable from that created by humans. There is an opportunity to unlock creativity and provide utility for both content creators and home cooks using AI. For example, LLMs might suggest alternative ingredients for a home cook who wants to make the plum torte but has a stone-fruit allergy or gluten intolerance. AI can provide a new spin on viral cucumber salads or ideas to use up your cucumber surplus. AI can tweak a recipe so it works perfectly in your connected oven. Perhaps AI use will cull some mediocre creators who are already just publishing slight variations of others’ recipes. (If so, good riddance. 👋) This could make some human-derived content even more valuable as its use indicates quality for premium publications and products. Unfortunately, many companies are jumping on the bandwagon too soon and without enough intention to make including AI in their products truly useful. (Too often, the real “intention” is to avoid paying creators fairly.) It’s a disappointment and a setback when potentially helpful tools are used poorly and haphazardly. But when brands can figure out how to combine the power of the best creators with the power of AI, there is a lot of room for true innovation and quality in the content space. After all Ina Garten's ever-popular recipe for chocolate cake is just the recipe from the back of the Hershey's cocoa can. It’s not the recipe’s words or even the results that make it a smash hit—it’s her personality, authority, and perspective—things that a machine will never have (well, not anytime soon, anyway…) Charlotte Engrav #foodtech Fresco

That’s a wrap! Team Fresco was thrilled to be part of IFA’s centennial in Berlin last week. As IFA 2024 celebrated ‘100 Moments of IFA,’ Fresco also marked several milestone moments. Our smart kitchen, featuring connected appliances from partners like Panasonic, The Middleby Corporation (Viking), KENWOOD, and Instant Pot Brands, had the most delicious booth at IFA. We hosted a lively cocktail hour and connected with current and future partners. We especially loved meeting home cooks who share our excitement about simplifying, inspiring, and enhancing their kitchen experiences. Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth. See you at IFA 2025! In case you missed us, you can see our highlights below: https://lnkd.in/eMAJ5Yt4 #IFABerlin2024

    Fresco CEO and co-founder

Last week, IFA Berlin - Europe’s biggest consumer electronics show - celebrated its 100th anniversary. Over 200,000 attendees went to Messe Berlin to see the latest in innovation and technology. 100 years ago, ovens were showcased as a modern luxury to give you better results with less effort. Over the last century, many products have joined the oven as a staple in our kitchen - mixers, microwaves, slow cookers, pressure cookers, air fryers - all of which share that common denominator - deliver better results with less effort. A week after leaving IFA, I have been wondering what (if anything) will stick from this show for the next 100 years in our kitchens. We know, software will be a massive driver in this next wave, but like the birth of the internet, some experiences were engaging and valuable, with the power to succeed in the long term, and some couldn’t attract customers if you paid them. There were some interesting things in small pockets that could fall into the first bucket (more on that later) but sadly, I saw a lot of experiences that sit in the second bucket. Useless “smart” features - like washing machines that allow you to answer a phone call - and gadget after gadget with “AI” simply for the sake of saying it had AI. This is not innovation, this is not being a pioneer, it’s a gimmick that hurts the industry. As Scott Heimendinger put so eloquently earlier this year, “no one wants an AI, IoT rolling pin”! As an industry, we NEED to do better. I urge all leaders who have the power to effect change to stop and think about what is actually going to drive stickiness. Chatbots on anything and everything is not the solution. Connecting all things to the internet is not the solution. Start with the problem you are trying to solve and look at the tools available to you to solve those problems, some of which include AI and IoT, but they are only two options of many. 100 years after that first IFA, our lives are even more time constrained than ever. Cooking should be a positive and nurturing experience. No matter how often you cook, what you are cooking, or who you are cooking for, your time and energy should be spent enjoying creating and eating a delicious meal, not stressing about it. That is why Fresco remain focused on leveraging all tools available to us, to deliver with our partners what the consumer wants: better results with less effort.
