Congratulations to Hansini Mallikarachchi, Geotechical Engineer in our Design team, who was shortlisted for the prestigious British Geotechnical Association Cooling Prize. Hansini was recognised for her research on two-way pressure cycling during installation of suction buckets in cohesive soil. As the offshore wind sector continues to innovate, suction buckets are becoming a popular alternative to monopile foundations. However, the installation process can sometimes encounter challenges due to unexpected ground conditions. Hansini’s work explores how two-way pressure cycling can serve as a key mitigation measure during these tricky installations. At the 55th anniversary of the Cooling Prize competition, Hansini presented her industrial research based on a North Sea wind farm project. While she didn’t take home the top prize, being shortlisted among such strong contenders is an impressive achievement in itself, and we couldn't be prouder of her dedication and hard work. Congratulating Hansini on her achievement, Offshore Technical Director, Trevon Joseph, said, "Hansini's contribution to the offshore geotechnical field to date has been immeasurable, and with many more years ahead of her, just think of what she is yet to achieve!” #BGA #CoolingPrize #OffshoreWind #Innovation #RenewableEnergy Venterra Group

We welcome the approval of the South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan (DMAP) earlier this week, marking a significant step forward for Ireland's offshore renewable energy future. This plan, which is the first sub-national marine spatial plan for Ireland, identifies four potential sites for new offshore wind farms, paving the way for an auction early next year for the first site, Tonn Nua—a 900 MW project anticipated to power up in the early 2030s. This approval, achieved without opposition in both Seanad Éireann (upper house) and the Dáil (parliament), is a clear sign of broad political support for accelerating Ireland's offshore wind ambitions. The successful delivery of the DMAP is a testament to the power of collaboration, with substantial public consultation and engagement ensuring the voices of communities, environmental stakeholders, and the fishing industry are all heard and considered. The Venterra Group/GDG team played a crucial role in the DMAP process, supporting it by integrating over 500 ecological, environmental and technical datasets. Our work supported the identification of optimal areas for development, contributing to a total capacity of around 4-5GW. This effort supports Ireland's first round of plan-led offshore wind development. This designated Maritime Area Plan is a critical step in developing an offshore wind industry in Ireland and together with the Phase 1 projects will contribute to Ireland's target of 5 GW of offshore wind in development by 2030. This a significant milestone in Ireland's journey towards a more sustainable and renewable energy future, well done to all involved. Floating Market appears to be Buoyant ! The Renewable UK published a report yesterday which quantifies the continued growth in the floating wind sector. This is timely ahead of the Floating Offshore Wind conference kicking off today in Aberdeen, where I hope to see colleagues from across the industry. Some key takeaways from this report, include: - 9% Growth in the total floating pipeline to 266GW capacity, still to be delivered ; - An additional 31 projects added to the pipeline, with 316 projects identified in total ( spanning early stage development through to consented projects ) ; - Worldwide, there are 245 MW of operational capacity across 15 projects, mostly demonstration projects ; - Norway and the UK lead the floating wind industry, representing more than half of the installed capacity to date ; From a supply chain perspective, I think it’s useful to consider the volume of new projects that are likely to be delivered in specific years. Whilst defining the “total pipeline” is important to demonstrate the overall progression of the floating wind sector, the supply chain needs to make critical investment decisions on the basis of secured capacity, therefore quantifying the near-term pipeline for projects that will take FID and move into construction is a key metric. The advisory team at Venterra Group have recently undertaken analysis to quantify the amount of capacity that is likely to be operational in the next decade – this shows the importance of a small number of commercial scale floating projects around the world that are hitting key project milestones in order to lock in the delivery timescales. For example, the recent announcement that the Green Volt project in Scotland secured a CfD for their 400MW floating site is a clear enabler to kick start industrial scale supply chain development for the floating sector. Projects of this magnitude will help unlock the potential of the industry, acting as a catalyst for port upgrades and the supporting infrastructure – all of which will help drive down the costs of future projects. I’ll be attending the FOW conference in Aberdeen today with a number of colleagues and technical experts. If anybody wants to catch up on how Venterra can assist the delivery of FOW, then please reach out.

We were delighted to see the official opening of the £340m Grand Central Station in Belfast, Ireland’s largest integrated transport hub. Described as a "game-changer" for bus and rail services across the north of Ireland, this project will transform how people move around the island and also pave the way for a more sustainable transport system for the future. Our Design team are proud to have been a part of this remarkable infrastructure development. Commissioned by ATG Group on behalf of GRAHAM Group, our environmental and geotechnical specialists worked on designing and validating a stabilisation and solidification solution for contaminated soils at the site. Our work was part of the scope of work that included re-routing a culvert connected to the Blackstaff River & Pound Burn, ensuring that the materials met stringent quality controls whilst fully complying with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency's requirements. Commenting on the official opening, Jonathan Bull, Managing Director of the Design & Advisory Service Lines at Venterra Group, said: "The success of the Grand Central Station project is a testament to the collaboration and dedication of the entire project team. From design to execution, every discipline worked seamlessly together to overcome challenges and deliver a landmark project that will serve Belfast for generations to come, and we are delighted to have played a part in it." #engineering #belfast #geotechnicalengineering #environmentalengineering

What an amazing first day at WindEnergy Hamburg! If you're attending, be sure to visit Jonathan Bull, Garron Lees and the Venterra Group team at B.5 240. Or let us know if you'd like to arrange a meeting to learn more about our full spectrum of services from design and planning to construction and decommissioning.
Wow, what a day! Time to catch our breath. The energy at WindEnergy Hamburg was electric, with offshore wind buzzing across the globe; it’s clear from speaking with clients and industry stakeholders just how much momentum this industry has right now. Our team was in serious demand, and the BD team is beaming after a day packed with client meetings. Highlights? A visit from Belgian Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten and an insightful fireside chat on the Venterra Group-sponsored Offshore Stage with British Ambassador to Germany, Andrew Mitchell CMG, and Venterra’s Paul Doherty, PhD. Doherty. Newly appointed, Ambassador Mitchell drew from his wealth of experience as Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Europe to discuss the importance of UK-German collaboration under the North Sea Cooperation Agreement. He wrapped up with a discussion on UK supply chain pressures, where Paul Doherty outlined ongoing measures to address the challenges. ✅ Day one done, and we’re just getting started! 💪 #WindEnergyHamburg #OffshoreWind #Venterra #HelpingWindPowerGrow
