Jessie Roche presents the funds from her hair donation 💇♀️ Jessie has spent years growing her hair, to be long enough to donate for wigs for oncology patients. She donated 15 inches of hair to the Rapunzel Foundation and collected donations for the NeoNatal unit. She raised a total of €1,075 for the Neonatal Unit. Jessie and her twin sister Abigail were born premature and spent time in the care of CUMH Neonatal staff, and along with their Dad's role as CUH Security, they have deep ties. They were joined by CMN2 Finola Brennan. On the second day of Baby Loss Awareness Week, we are launching a policy brief to support advocacy efforts around the introduction of workplace supports for people who experience pregnancy loss under 24 weeks. This summarises findings from the PLACES (#PregnancyLoss in #Workplaces: Informing policymakers on support mechanisms) project, which was conducted by researchers at University College Cork and the University of Galway. The PLACES report – commissioned by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, and launched earlier this year – recommended that a statutory right to paid leave should be introduced for pre-viability pregnancy loss, regardless of the gestational stage or the reason for the loss. This would allow for a period of recovery and show societal recognition of the impact of pre-viability pregnancy loss. A further eight recommendations for Government to consider in developing workplace supports for people who experience pregnancy loss under 24 weeks were also proposed. Despite acknowledgement of the importance of the work and the need to consider the report’s findings, Government postponed discussion of the Reproductive Health Related Leave Bill 2021 for 12 months, until January 2025. Further advocacy is needed to get this issue back on political agendas. You can't stop Kannan Natchimuthu. 🏃🎾 The CUMH Occupational Therapist has been going above and beyond this year. On top of doing his best to help everyone who comes to CUMH, Kannan has fundraised to improve services, facilities and equipment for CUMH NeoNatal through multiple events. His work with CUH Charity has seen him raise €4,129.67 by completing the London Marathon 2024 and sharing his love of tennis with CUH/CUMH staff by organising the first Tennis Charity Tournament, at Sunday's Well Tennis Club. Anyone who knows Kannan knows that he goes above and beyond and we are very grateful for the work he has done for the charity. A partnership we are immensely proud of and what a pleasure it's been to work with the Ireland South Women & Infants Directorate to launch this initiative🩸🚀 In utilising the Office of Government Procurement framework, CUMH were the first hospital in Ireland to introduce free period care to their staff members, emphasising their commitment to creating a more comfortable workplace for their staff. After receiving such positive feedback, Riley's eco-friendly period care will now be made available to all staff across Ireland South Women and Infants Directorate. This group includes the maternity and neonatal units of University Hospital Waterford, Tipperary University Hospital, University Hospital Kerry and Cork University Maternity Hospital. Dr Mairead O'Riordan, Clinical Director at CUMH, emphasised the importance of menstrual health in the overall well-being and productivity of staff. She said "At CUMH, we prioritise the health and well-being of our staff, especially regarding women's health. It is the very nature of the service we provide. This is not just a basic, necessary gesture, but a substantial positive impact on our staff's well-being. We understand the disruption periods can cause, especially when period products are not easily accessible in a fast-paced environment. Riley, a Cork-based, female-founded, innovative organisation providing sustainable period care, is the perfect partner for CUMH in this endeavour." We couldn't be prouder of this partnership because having one of Ireland’s leaders in female health partnering with us just highlights the importance of providing these products to staff members.
