Celebrating our recent recipients of the Research Ireland industry-focused fellowships. Dr Juan Albarracín from the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems (CSIS) and Lero at University of Limerick is collaborating with EnergyPro Asset Management Ltd on a project designed to improve fault detection in wind turbines using deep Generative AI models. Dr Albarracín's project explores how Generative AI can improve the detection of issues in wind turbines. Modern fault detection systems rely on sensor data, but only the most advanced (and expensive) sensors provide the high-resolution information needed to catch problems early. The goal of the project is to develop AI models that can enhance data from older, more affordable sensors—essentially upgrading their accuracy without the need for costly hardware upgrades. By doing so, it aims to make wind turbine maintenance more efficient and cost-effective, helping to maximize energy production and reduce downtime. #StayCurious UL Research

We are looking to hire a part-time Research Assistant to work on our Citizen's Assembly Project "People Power: Sustainable Energy Generation through Citizen Movement" to build energy harvesting infrastructures to be installed in Limerick City. The position is ideal for any current engineering or physics undergraduate/postgraduate students in University of Limerick, but we will accept applications from any scientific background. Celebrating our recent recipients of the Research Ireland industry-focused fellowships. Dr Maria Zubair from the Department of Chemical Sciences University of Limerick and Bernal Institute, University of Limerick will be working in collaboration with Analog Devices on a project aimed at creating advanced materials that can meet the evolving needs of the electronics industry. As the electronics industry is advancing rapidly, especially with innovations in 5G communication and artificial intelligence, there is an increasing demand for smaller and more integrated devices. However, this rapid advancement presents a critical challenge: managing heat dissipation. Dr. Zubair's research will tackle this issue by developing novel techniques to improve material interfaces and composite formulations. By employing state-of-the-art surface modification methods and nanomaterial engineering, the project will push the boundaries of interface control and material performance to new heights. #StayCurious UL Research
