The European Union Aviation Safety Agency EASA recently held its very first European Aviation Fuel (EAF) Stakeholder Forum in Cologne, and our head of Business Development Barrie King was invited to attend! (front row, 3rd from right). The EASA have been tasked by the EU Parliament to develop the SAF/ SBC (Synthetic Blend Component) EU normative and the SBC market in the EU. What’s the past, present and future of sustainable aviation fuel? 🛫 Our panelists Iris ten Have, Nicholas Ball, Ph.D. M.Eng., Martin Spencer and Toby Chan highlighted some key aspects of sustainability and price competitiveness of SAF: 🔥 We’ve used fuel since we set foot on this planet. It started by burning wood to keep ourselves warm. Eventually, we discovered coal and oil. To this day, nothing can compete with these hydrocarbons. That’s where SAF comes in. 💰 A lot of technologies related to SAF already exist for decades. The question is – why are they only taking off now? Essentially, it all comes down to money. 💸 Based on the SAF production pathways we have today, the more sustainable you want to be, the more expensive it’s going to be. 🏛 The sub-mandates of e-fuels will likely support and reward the most sustainable technologies. 🌍 The SAF technology we should use strongly depends on geography, and it’s likely that in the future we’ll see a mix of SAF production pathways.
