Rolls-Royce SMR Ltd. is an English company focused on developing next-generation Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). By using EPRI's Preventive Maintenance Basis Database, Rolls Royce SMR has saved approximately 3,000 hours of work and was able to develop a detailed maintenance schedule much earlier in the design life cycle than typically is possible for a new plant. 👏🏻 #SMR #NuclearEnergy #EPRI
Designing a new nuclear reactor is a challenging task requiring careful thought into how long-term plant maintenance will be accomplished. A comprehensive maintenance technical basis must be built for all systems and component groups to determine equipment layout, maintenance performance, access needs, and overall maintenance requirements. Rolls-Royce SMR leveraged robust industry data from EPRI’s Preventative Maintenance Basis Database (PMBD) which is informed by decades of commercial light water plant operations. As a result, they saved approximately 3,000 hours using the PMBD data to aid in developing the maintenance technical basis for their new design. This also allowed them to develop a detailed maintenance schedule much earlier in the design life cycle than typically is possible for a new plant. They received an EPRI Tech Transfer Award for this work. In this video, Nick Camilli, EPRI, and Sam Parker, Rolls-Royce SMR, discuss the project and how it’s helping to inform the design of their small modular reactor. #nuclearcollaboration #EPRItechtransfer

We are all better equipped to drive a customer-focused energy transformation when we work together. That simple truth is foundational to EPRI's first-ever meeting of world leaders in nuclear and non-nuclear power generation - Leading the Energy Supply Transition: A Global Executive Forum. Kicking off in Barcelona in a few short weeks, the forum will bring together senior representatives of many leading energy companies for candid, focused discussions on navigating the energy transition - delivering the value of distinct, real-world experience to stakeholders navigating accelerating change. It’s no accident that the inaugural meeting will take place in Europe, as the region's experiences as an early mover in many aspects of the ongoing transformation provide lessons learned that can benefit decision-makers around the world. Our forum is designed to uncover new insights, improve industry-level information-sharing, and prioritize key actions to develop, deploy, and leverage energy supply resources for today and tomorrow. We will break down technology-centric barriers to have real conversations reaching all corners of energy supply - proven resources like nuclear, gas, solar and wind, along with emerging resources such as advanced nuclear, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen and low-carbon fuels. We stand to learn a lot in our short time together. I look forward to sharing new insights coming out of this exciting gathering of industry leaders.

The enduring value of generative #AI technology will come from domain-specific applications. I am excited to speak at NVIDIA’s #GTC25 this month to discuss transforming the electric sector by leveraging advanced AI technologies to innovate the way electricity is made, moved, and used by customers. EPRI will soon launch the Open Power AI Consortium, a collaboration with NVIDIA, Microsoft, Articul8 AI, Oracle, WorldWideTech, and many others. This initiative aims to develop and maintain open-source databases and libraries, empowering the industry with AI and generative AI tools, including a collaborative development sandbox. The sandbox environment will be used to develop and validate AI applications—or use cases—in collaboration with startups, academia, national labs, utilities, technology companies, and more. Additionally, under this collaboration, EPRI will develop comprehensive benchmarks based on industry best practices to evaluate model performance. Models will be tested against these benchmarks, with performance expected to improve over time through better architectures, enhanced data, additional compute time fine-tunning, reinforcement learning, and industry advancements. Working together, we can provide efficiency and productivity gains, enhanced decision-making, improved safety, accelerated innovation and discovery, as well as the ability to further customize models released, among other benefits. From February 25-27, EPRI Europe participated in the G-PST Workshop on Multi-Model Workflows for Integrated System Planning in Amsterdam, presenting key insights on interoperability and modelling. 💡𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 & 𝒎𝒐𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕? As energy systems become more complex—integrating renewables, storage, electrification, and distributed energy resources—we need accurate, flexible, and interoperable modelling tools to plan and operate them efficiently. Without interoperability, models remain isolated, limiting collaboration, insights, and system optimization. 💡𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐄𝐏𝐑𝐈 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞’𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: ✅𝐀𝐈 & 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 AI can help overcome technical challenges in interoperability between energy modelling tools, and it will likely improve over time. However, true interoperability isn’t just about technology—it requires alignment within the community on shared standards and best practices. Ultimately, it’s up to users and developers to collaborate and ensure seamless integration. ✅𝐈𝐄𝐂-𝐂𝐈𝐌 The IEC Common Information Model (IEC-CIM) has enabled interoperability for electricity grid models for decades. What lessons can today’s energy modelling community learn from IEC-CIM? How can we ensure that new energy system models integrate seamlessly with traditional power system tools? ✅ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬𝐞𝐭 Tools for Energy System Modelling EPRI Europe also presented work that is being developed under the Mopo project. In this project, we are developing an interoperable framework in Spine Tool for integrated energy system planning in Europe. This effort supports a more cohesive, flexible, and standardized approach to energy system modelling. #Modelling #Interoperability #AI #EPRIEurope Joep van Genuchten Álvaro Porras Cabrera

Global energy challenges call for international solutions, and to meet the load demand challenge facing electricity grids, EPRI is pleased to announce the expansion of our DCFlex Initiative in Europe. Data centers are one of the fastest growing industries worldwide, and this initiative will explore and demonstrate how they can become contributors to support and stabilize the electric grid as load demand continues to climb. We are pleased to welcome Réseau de Transport d'Électricité and Schneider Electric based in France, ING based in Amsterdam, and PPC S.A. Group, based in Athens, Greece to this collaborative effort that was initially launched with Google, Meta and NVIDIA. DCFlex will explore how flexibility hubs can function as living laboratories that will test and showcase innovative and replicable strategies for improving operational flexibility, grid integration, and backup power solutions. We will plan five to ten large scale demonstration sites to be deployed in both existing and planned data centers with the first of the hubs planned for later this year. The next few years will offer insights that will be critical to shaping the future of data center operations and their role in sustainability and grid reliability. EPRI will play a critical role in the knowledge sharing generated through this growing international initiative so that solutions can be applied globally.
