Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment reposted this
I've been trying to arrange a trip to visit the NatWest Group sustainability team in India since long before the pandemic hit and I finally made it last month. It was brilliant to spend time with our great team - Tania Chatterjee (She/Her/Hers), Sakshi S., Sukesh Nair, Nandana Dutta, and Supriya Jhunjhunwala - and other colleagues and to visit several of our CSR partners. Nothing beats meeting in person to help build relationships and to allow for meaningful discussions to support the ongoing development of our sustainability strategy. One of many highlights of the trip was a volunteering visit to a project that colleagues from NatWest Group have been supporting for several years under the auspices of ATREE (Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment) - a visionary organisation focused on environmental conservation and sustainable, socially just development. Here's what the day involved... I woke up in the wee hours of Friday the 21st of February and made my way to Venkateshpura Lake in Bengaluru India, to join a group of 34 of our colleagues from India to help restore a lake in Bengaluru. This lake is vital for groundwater recharge, biodiversity, and as a place for the community to connect with nature. The project aims to revive Venkateshpura Lake and reverse ecological degradation caused by untreated sewage and invasive species and restore ecological health, enhance biodiversity, and foster community stewardship. Dr. M. Soubadra Devy from ATREE kicked off the day by sharing the lake’s restoration plan, focusing on the removal of invasive plant species and the reintroduction of native flora to enhance biodiversity. This was followed by an engaging discussion led by Dr. Priyanka Jamwal on water conservation and quality assessments conducted at the lake. We then rolled up our sleeves to start the volunteering. First we harvested plants from the floating islands and then chopped the harvested plants into small bits to help mulching. Floating islands are metal floats on which plants are grown so that they can absorb heavy metals and other pollutants from the lake. This will help purify the water of the lake. After chopping the harvested plants to fine bits we then trudged on to the shore and planted seven different types of butterfly host plants on specially designed butterfly mounds around the lake. These butterfly and bee gardens have been planted as part of the project to attract pollinators and restore biodiversity, thus fostering a self-sustaining ecosystem for pollinators. To wrap up the day, Supriya Jhunjhunwala engaged volunteers with an interactive, nail biting quiz on bees and butterflies which was a fun way to learn about them! A big shout-out to all the volunteers for their commitment to sustainability and ecological restoration! Your efforts are making a real difference. The team from the Water and Society programme at ATREE participated in the international conference on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for Water Circularity and Sustainability, held from 26th to 28th February 2025, at IISc Bengaluru. The conference was, organised by CDD India & Divecha Centre for Climate Change, IISc. The team from ATREE presented posters on various themes. Dr. Sagna, Arun Kumar, Vipin Kumar, Monika, Ramya, and Pratham showcased their research through poster presentations during the event. Additionally, Sminu (PhD student at ATREE) presented a paper titled Framework for Urban Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Using Constructed Wetlands: Linking Ecology, Economy, and Society. Conference Highlights On Day 1, the conference focused on nature-based and eco-centric approaches to used water management, along with sustainable strategies for mitigating urban flooding. These discussions emphasized sustainable urban water management practices and innovative solutions for addressing water-related challenges in cities. On Day 2, the sessions explored the roadmap towards sustainable management of groundwater resources, highlighting strategies for preserving and efficiently utilising groundwater. Additionally, experts discussed enhancing water quality through nature-based solutions: harnessing ecosystem services for sustainable water management and using nature-based solutions to manage water bodies and wetlands to enhance aquatic ecosystems, reinforcing the role of ecosystem services in maintaining water quality and biodiversity. On Day 3, the focus shifted to paper presentations on various themes, showcasing cutting-edge research and case studies on nature-based solutions for water management and ecosystem restoration. Throughout the conference, discussions focused on integrating nature-based solutions (NbS) into urban and rural water systems, addressing key challenges such as urban flooding, groundwater management, wetland conservation, and decentralised wastewater treatment. The event highlighted the importance of community-led conservation efforts and scientific research in shaping sustainable water policies. The conference provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, strengthening partnerships, and fostering innovative approaches to ecological restoration.
