"It's not just the AI that's going to disrupt, it's people with AI that are going to disrupt people without AI." "The most important quality in a winner? It is persistence. That's what I really believe." "It is very important to be a leader in the market. Creating that clarity where you define the market so that you have a 20% market share is what we define as creating leadership." "Business growth is not a sequential thing. All businesses go through these S-curves. You do certain things right, you see growth, and at a certain point that growth tends to flatten out. Then you have to reinvent yourself." These and many more earned secrets from Dr. Anand Deshpande, founder and chairman of Persistent Systems, in the latest episode of the Blume Podcast. Scaling Persistent from $21,000 seed capital to a $9 billion global tech powerhouse, Dr. Deshpande's journey is the epitome of 'Winning Beyond Boundaries.' We've been lucky to have Rohit Kaul positively obsess about how to make content one of the key levers of Blume Ventures' brand and impact in the Indian VC space. So much learning every day about the impact of content, knowledge, learning and multiplier effects.
Heart is full to see the Blume Podcast share the spotlight with some of the best Indian podcasts, like The Empire Podcast by William Dalrymple and Anita Anand, Figuring Out by Raj Shamani, and The Core Report by Govindraj Ethiraj. As seen at Spotify's Podcasters Day. Just in case anyone’s wondering, yes, we’re a venture fund, not a content studio. But hey, we’ll take it 😁 PS: A good time for everyone to read Mario Gabriele's latest banger on how venture funds build soft power. Link: https://lnkd.in/gkHNCVrG Karthik B. This interview with Jensen Huang by Brad Gerstner and Clark Tang was a fascinating peek into his vision for NVIDIA, how he looks at competitive moats and the future of AI. Sharing some of my key highlights 🌟 📈 Super Moore's Law : NVIDIA has achieved a 100000x reduction in computing costs over 10 years, far outpacing traditional Moore's Law. This "accelerated compute" innovation was possible because they focused on the entire the hardware stack (GPUs, Tensor Cores, NVLink, high-bandwidth memory) and the software stack and libraries. 🛡 Combinatorial Moats : NVIDIA's advantage is not just about raw computing power and FLOPS, it is combinatorial - integrating GPUs, CPUs, networking, software stacks, and data pipelines into a unified platform. He thinks of this in the lens of Amdahl's Law - the overall performance improvement of a system is limited by the portion of the system that's sped up. 🧠 Inference Era : Both training and inference now are equally challenging. As models evolve to incorporate fast and slow thinking, reasoning, reflection, and simulation - scaling inference is the most significant hurdle. The north star is to optimise for time to first token, and innovations like NVLink position NVIDIA pretty well for this. Inference will scale a million times, maybe a billion times from where we are today! 🌏 Universal Computing Platform : In Jensen's mind, the data center is the new unit of computing. He thinks of NVIDIA as a market maker for a universal computing platform, where they are collaborating closely with hyperscalers to first disaggregate their advancements, and integrate them with the nuances of each platform across AWS, GCP, Azure. 🤖 Agentic Employees : He predicts a future where every knowledge worker is a "CEO of AI agents". Just as we lead teams of people today with "prompting" - context, constraints, goals, and objectives - we'll soon be leading teams of AI agents to accomplish complex projects. While he expects NVIDIA's human workforce to grow gradually, he also sees them being augmented much more rapidly with millions of these agents. The future Jensen describes is not just about hardware, but for NVIDIA to become the foundation of an "intelligence factory" - pushing out advancements to help founders and builders create powerful applications on the software layer. It truly feels like he's the top systems-at-scale thinker of this era, along with Elon. Very much looking forward to his comments in the context of the Indian startup ecosystem and our right to win in this AI era, at next week's NVIDIA AI Summit @ Mumbai! 🛫 Blume Ventures Sanjay Nath Karthik B. New episode of the Blume Podcast S3 is here! 🎙 In our 5th episode of this season, Karthik B. Reddy hosts Dr. Anand Deshpande, founder and Chairman of Persistent Systems, for a masterclass on entrepreneurship. Dr. Deshpande's journey of building Persistent Systems over three decades is truly remarkable. Here are some highlights: 📈 Since its 2010 IPO, Persistent's market cap has grown by an astounding 5,500%. 💰 Profitable from day one, even through major economic crises like the dot-com bust and the 2008 global financial crisis. 🌍 From $21K seed capital in 1990 to a $9B global tech giant with 22,500+ employees across 18 countries. 📊 Nearly doubled revenue in the last four years, from $500M in FY20 to $1B+ in FY24. 🚀 Pioneered the Outsourced Product Development model in the '90s. Here are our five favorite insights from the episode (with quotes from Dr Deshpande) Strive for market leadership, not just size "Creating that clarity where you define the market so that you have a 20% market share is what we define as creating leadership." Evolve from founder-centric to company-centric "The founder also must work for the company, and it's the company's vision and the company's mission." Deeply understand your ideal customer "Many founders don't think enough about what is the ideal customer that they are going after. They just start selling, which is a mistake." Navigate growth S-curves effectively "Every s-curve has been very unique. You can feel the difference between what works in one s-curve to the next s-curve. What you do, how you behave, what team you have to have, and all of those things are necessarily different." Leverage AI as a competitive advantage "It's not just the AI that's going to disrupt, it's people with AI that are going to disrupt people without AI." It feels super amazing to see the results of the hours (and hours) spent researching and drafting questions for the podcasts. Not to mention, I’ve learned so much from the research and, of course, from the interviews themselves. A big thanks to Rohit Kaul Karthik B. Reddy for the opportunity! PS- There's more in the pipeline!
