"How does architecture bypass the low levels of serotonin and dopamine and act as a natural remedy, promoting healthy habits, inducing drive and motivation and balancing out one's anxiety levels?" Resharing a great article by Pierre Longhini ,CCD Fellow. As we read this article, we were reminded of how unintentional design of cities can become a contribution to an experience of depression.

Conscious Cities Journal No.06 I Latest Edition Can architecture help us regain the joy of life? What impact can architecture have on tackling or even preventing the increase in depressive disorders? In the article, "When Pleasure is Gone: How can Architecture Help Us Overcome Depression?" CCD Fellow Pierre Longhini of PL-Arch argues that as urbanisation grows, our built environments must evolve to support mental well-being. Let’s rethink how architecture impacts mental health. The "Urban Tapestry: weaving a city together through Photographs and Stories" is a project initiated by Conscious Guwahati, a city chapter of The Centre for Conscious Design (CCD). This project is a part of the Upcoming Conscious Cities festival happening on March 21st-25th, 2025 focusing on the theme "Regrounding"- a deliberate practice of reconnecting time with place. Conscious Guwahati invites photographs and stories from the city's community on any one of the themes or for both, as stated under: 1. "Reconnecting with Place"- this theme encourages photographs of the city spaces that help you connect with them, emotionally, psychologically and physically. We are looking forward to knowing the stories behind these photographs on the connections with the city that have influenced your well-being, identities and sense of belonging. Stories of the city's built environment can also include your questions on how we can create meaningful spaces that promote social cohesion, and imbibe a unique identity as the city's community. Photographs for this theme can also include photo collages of elements that you desire for your city to move towards that makes it meaningful for you. 2. "Design of Time"- The second theme refers to having city spaces that can slow down time for us and foster relaxation, and creativity. We are curious to know the stories behind your photographs. We are looking to receive photographs with stories that help us reshape a newer healthier relationship with time. Photographs for this theme can also include photo collages of elements that you desire for your city to have, that can slow down time. We invite everyone who currently lives or has lived in Guwahati to take part in The Urban Tapestry project and share your photographs of the city with stories around themes "Reconnecting with Place" and "Design of Time". We are currently accepting entries from 20th September 2024 onwards. Every representation from the community counts as a voice towards reshaping a healthier Guwahati! Conscious Cities Journal No.06 I October Edition Amidst the contours of the ongoing housing crisis, how do we design for connection? How can we as designers shape richer, more connected spaces for well-being when space itself is at such a premium? In the article "The Need for Roots: Design for Connection in a Housing Crisis", author Sarah Klym highlights the concept of "rootedness," emphasising that community ties are essential for well-being and resilience. At Human Studio Architecture + Urban Design, she focuses on creating spaces that foster social interaction, as seen in a mixed-use project called 800 Commercial in Vancouver. As we prepare for the upcoming Conscious Cities Festival in 2025, we are revisiting a coffee table book, titled "Forever Guwahati", published by Guwahati Metropolitan Authority (GMDA), Government of Assam (2014). The book outlines the journey of Guwahati from "a sleepy little village" to a "large metropolis". Although there have been many changes over the past decade since this book was published, nevertheless, as a reader, one can revisit the city's origins, movements of people, culture, mythology, urban affordances, and prominent architectural design and the reasons behind them. You will also find photographs of some of the Assam-type houses and how they still play a crucial role in preventing destruction during earthquakes. Let's not forget about the community-sustaining and transboundary river Brahmaputra and the attachments people have with it. This festival, Conscious Guwahati, is exploring and expanding on the dialogue on how design can inspire the city to slow down and meaningfully build emotional bonds with its community for Health and Well-Being. Join us in March 2025! Link: https://lnkd.in/dgwHPhk5

On 7th Nov we're holding our second Lighthouse event! Three of our Lighthouse Fellows, Susan Magsamen, Colin Ellard, and Hugo Spiers will each deliver a short talk inviting us to explore science’s blind spots. What are the questions that aren’t being asked, and why? What do we stand to gain from exploring the lesser known, and how might we do it? Lighthouse events gather the CCD community to set a path of inquiry for the field of Conscious Design and the Conscious Cities Movement. After the talks, all participants will be invited to smaller breakout rooms where you will have the opportunity to connect and share your own ideas and provocations.
