During summers, parked cars become heat traps as sunlight passes through windows, heating the interior like a greenhouse. Similarly, glass buildings absorb and retain heat, leading to uncomfortable indoor temperatures and increased cooling needs. Effective ventilation and strategic window placement are key in both cases. Just as cracking a car window helps release hot air, well-designed openings in buildings enable cross-ventilation, reducing reliance on air conditioning. Thoughtful design can mitigate heat buildup, promoting energy efficiency and thermal comfort. Are there sustainable alternatives to conventional air conditioning? It was this question that led architect and designer Monish Siripurapu and his team to explore innovative cooling solutions. Their answer? CoolAnt - a natural cooling system that blends traditional techniques with modern technology to tackle climate change while keeping spaces comfortable. The CoolAnt system uses a modular façade unit called Beehive to reduce temperatures naturally. This is an affordable, scalable, sustainable, and aesthetically appealing solution offering a promising alternative to conventional cooling methods. In a recent video, Ridhi Khosla Jalan explores the CoolAnt installation at Ahmedabad Airport. The choice of building materials plays a crucial role in determining the thermal comfort of a space. Materials with high thermal mass, like clay, stone, and brick, absorb heat during the day and release it slowly at night, maintaining a balanced indoor temperature. On the other hand, modern materials like glass can trap heat, leading to discomfort and higher energy consumption for cooling. Using local materials is the best approach for sustainable construction, as they are naturally suited to the climate, reducing the need for artificial heating or cooling. They also have a lower carbon footprint and blend harmoniously with the surroundings. A space built with climate-responsive, natural materials also aligns with Vastu principles and ensures long-term comfort and well-being. At the Roots Foundation, in #Gurgaon, skilled embroidery artisans bring their craft to life. It is quite inspiring how the organisation is supporting women and empowering them through their work. We had the opportunity to be part of their environmental initiative in creating this roof top workspace thermally more comfortable with natural cooling solutions. Working on the topmost floor means unbearable summer heat, making it nearly impossible to be productive in peak summers. With a combination of CoolAnt Binary and enhanced ventilation using exhausts, we implemented this project to make the space naturally cooler and reduce energy consumption and operational costs as compared to mechanical alternatives like ACs. When buying or constructing a house, natural and cross ventilation should be a top priority. Good ventilation ensures a continuous flow of fresh air, reducing indoor pollutants, humidity, and heat buildup. It enhances comfort, lowers energy consumption, and promotes better health by preventing respiratory issues. Cross ventilation is especially effective in maintaining a cool and pleasant indoor environment. Vastu Shastra also emphasizes proper ventilation. It suggests positioning windows, doors, and openings in specific directions—like ensuring airflow from the north and east for freshness and vitality. A well-ventilated home aligns with Vastu and climatology principles, fostering positive energy, mental clarity, and overall well-being. Be it Vastu or climate responsive design principles, prioritizing natural airflow creates a healthier, more sustainable living space. Stilt spaces are often ignored in buildings. In an office building these spaces are indispensable, offering tremendous potential for hanging out, relaxing, and moving around. In cities where natural landscapes and open areas are lacking, these spaces if designed well can offer great character. This office building in Noida had plans to transform its parking lot into a lounge-like space for people to sit, relax, and unwind. To make the space more comfortable, the Binary facade was introduced along the edge to naturally cool the stilt area. The idea is simple—create a cooling screen that not only reduces the temperature but also adds a unique visual and sensory experience. #naturalcooling #passivedesign #coolant #antstudio #noida #officedesign #terracotta #climateresponsivedesign #buildingenvelope

#visionsandvoices Imagine standing in the sweltering heat of a paper factory in Bhadrachalam, Telangana, where the air ripples with oppressive warmth. In the heart of this industrial maze, Monish Siripurapu’s latest creation—a cooling installation resembling a cacti—promises relief. This isn’t just a technical solution; it’s a symbol of his design philosophy: blending sustainability, technology and compassion. @studio.ant Over cups of coffee and bursts of laughter, Monish takes us on a journey into his world (CoolAnt and transformative projects like the Pangolin Pavilion) —a world where design is both functional and poetic, a reflection of his commitment to innovation with heart. “I want us to be a practice that’s socially relevant, addressing issues of people and climate,” he says. Upcoming projects, though under wraps, promise to push these boundaries further. And while his inspirations—Geoffrey Bawa, Antoni Gaudí, Santiago Calatrava— reflect his global outlook, Monish’s heart remains rooted in India, crafting designs that hug the ground, honour tradition, and embrace the future. Designing for climate goes beyond a one-size-fits-all approach. Factors such as material selection, fenestration placement, and spatial planning vary across regions—what works in the colder northern areas may not be suitable for the humid coastal zones. Similarly Vastu principles and passive design strategies are also meant to adapt to site-specific contexts, ensuring optimal comfort and energy efficiency. A truly sustainable approach considers local climate conditions, utilizing materials and design techniques that enhance natural ventilation, thermal comfort, and overall building performance. Instead of rigid standards, climate-responsive design should evolve based on environmental needs, making each structure uniquely suited to its surroundings and user needs.
