I write this post on the eve of the World Biogas Association INDIA Congress 2024 in New Delhi. The Goes Foundation (https://lnkd.in/eRA8CjJ7) is clearly stating the urgency of preventing organic wastes reaching our rivers and #oceans. #Biodiversity loss has reached a critical point. Global heating has already reached 1.5 degrees. If we can prevent the 105bn tonnes of #organic wastes we humans generate every year (human #sewage, animal #manures and slurries, #foodwaste, other agri wastes and food & drink processing #wastes) from reaching our rivers and oceans, we not only stop this existential damage getting any worse, but capturing and recycling these wastes through #anaerobicdigestion/#biogas and complementary technologies will prevent the #methane they emit as these wastes break down – today the vast majority are not treated. This could prevent 0.1 degree of global heating. Critical from the perspective of humanity’s #survival, achieving this is also a huge #economic #opportunity, worth billions – millions of #bioCNG plants need to be built globally as well as huge supply chains and trained human resources, in an astonishingly short timeline – we need to act as if we are in a war because no other approach will allow us to address these existential challenges with the necessary speed. 2030 is now just 5 years away. The biggest challenge is getting so many stakeholders’ interests aligned, alongside globally standardised policies, regulations and standards which enable developers to put together project proposals capable of achieving financial close as fast as possible. With the support of the Global Methane Hub, TotalEnergies and GHD, we are close to finalising the Global Biogas Regulatory Framework and International Anaerobic Certification Scheme, which can be adapted on a country by country basis. We now look forward to supporting #India to develop an India Biogas Roadmap to deliver the 5,000 large scale bioCNG plants India has committed to by 2030, bringing all stakeholders together to agree the vision, the challenges, and the solutions that will ensure India continues #MakingBiogasHappen. The second World Biogas Association INDIA Congress 2024, starting tomorrow, will continue the discussion we started last year and lay the groundwork for India’s Biogas Roadmap, which as the Founder of the Global Biofuels Alliance, can create the #blueprint for #G20 countries and others to develop their own country #roadmap.
