#Opinion | 'Konkan Cities Must Build Resilience to Extreme Rain' - Vishwas Chitale PhD and Shravan Prabhu write for Sakal Media Group. A recent study by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), which mapped changes in monsoon patterns over the past 40 years (1982-2022) at the tehsil or sub-district level for the first time, revealed a significant rise in the frequency of heavy rainfall days along India’s western coast. This rise in extreme rainfall affects agriculture, water levels, and power in our grids, disrupting daily life and often bringing cities to a standstill. As heavy rain-induced flooding becomes the new normal for cities along the western coast, how can we flood-proof them? About us
The Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) is one of Asia’s leading not-for-profit policy research institutions. The Council uses data, integrated analysis, and strategic outreach to explain – and change – the use, reuse, and misuse of resources. The Council addresses pressing global challenges through an integrated and internationally focused approach. It prides itself on the independence of its high-quality research, develops partnerships with public and private institutions, and engages with the wider public. CEEW once again featured extensively across nine categories in the ‘2019 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report’, including being ranked as South Asia’s top think tank (15th globally) with an annual operating budget of less than USD 5 million for the seventh year in a row. In 2016, CEEW was also ranked 2nd in India, 4th outside Europe and North America, and 20th globally out of 240 think tanks as per the ICCG Climate Think Tank’s standardised rankings. In 2013 and 2014, CEEW was rated as India’s top climate change think-tank as per the ICCG standardised rankings. In over 14 years of operations, The Council has engaged in more than 270 research projects, published well over 200 peer-reviewed books, policy reports and papers, engaged with governments around the world over 670 times, helped state governments with water and irrigation reforms, and organised more than 350 seminars and conferences.

🤝 We're committed to strengthening India's #ClimateResilience. Our CEO, Arunabha Ghosh, met Secretary Hillary Clinton at the Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting #CGI2024 where two of our Commitments to Action (CTAs) have been accepted into the Clinton Global Initiative 2024 portfolio. The CTAs build upon CEEW’s ongoing work in climate resilience: ☀️ Advancing heat resilience across cities and districts 🌾 Developing climate-smart cropping calendars in Maharashtra. These efforts aim to impact nearly 1 billion people across India who are exposed to heatwaves, and more than 13 million small and marginal farmers in Maharashtra, who depend on rainfed agriculture. We have always worked towards democratising access to high-resolution climate risk data. Whether it was our collaboration with the Thane Municipal Corporation that led to the creation of the city’s first Heat Action Plan, or our recently published report on sub-district-level changes in Indian monsoon patterns over the past 40 years - our research has sought to leverage data to strengthen local policies and plans. This engagement promises to enhance opportunities for knowledge sharing while also enabling us to advance our goals of achieving zero heat-related mortality in India and reducing crop losses due to climate variability. 🔗Read more at https://lnkd.in/gyHTKBxH Mayuri Ghosh Vishwas Chitale PhD Shravan Prabhu #ClimateWeekNYC

CEEW at #REIEXPO2024! Commercial and industrial consumers account for over 50% of the country's total electricity consumption, but only 6% comes from renewable sources. To meet the national target of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, C&I consumers in India must ramp up their decarbonisation journey. How can Indian businesses play a pivotal role in meeting this target? Moderating the panel, ‘Accelerating Renewable Energy Adoption for Indian Businesses’, our Programme Lead Prateek Aggarwal will delve into the evolving landscape of RE procurement for businesses and what’s needed for a complete transition to renewable energy. Join him and other industry experts at Renewable Energy India Expo 2024: 📅 4 October 2024 📌 Solarise, 2nd Floor, India Expo Centre, Greater Noida 🕰️ 1430 - 1530 IST 🔗Register at: https://lnkd.in/gdctFySN #CEEWEvents #ReneableEnergy #Sustainability #ClimateAction

#G20 #G20Brasil | How can G20 leaders accelerate investments in climate resilient urban infrastructure? Climate and weather-related disasters have surged five-fold over the past 50 years, causing over USD 250 billion in losses in 2023 alone. Despite the pressing need, investments in climate-resilient infrastructure remain inadequate. Only USD 85.6 billion in FDI was directed towards infrastructure in LMICs through 2020, a fraction of the estimated USD 1.5 trillion required annually to address infrastructure deficits. In a T20 policy brief, we recommend: ✅ Standardising #ClimateRisk assessments across LMICs ✅ Integrating #RiskAssessments throughout the infrastructure life-cycle ✅ Developing international design standards for resilient infrastructure ✅ Building the capacity of decision-makers in risk communication ✅ Transforming the infrastructure finance landscape 🔗Read the policy brief at: https://lnkd.in/gxG-bQZr Ahana Chatterjee Shreya Wadhawan Savina Carluccio Niladri Gupta Deo Raj Gurung Sana Dharani Sharmala Naidoo

#CEEWDialogues This Saturday, we were delighted to host ISIS at CEEW! We discussed how the Institute of Strategic & International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia Studies, Malaysia's pre-eminent foreign policy think tank, and Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) can support the elevated comprehensive strategic partnership between India and Malaysia. As prominent Asian economies, we must come together to solve the challenges of the Global South, leveraging our shared - and different - experiences and complementary strengths. We explored ideas for joint efforts to support the realisation of bilateral priorities set by our two governments. India, Malaysia, and the Global South will need transition and adaptation finance at scale, strategic foresight and enablers for new and emerging low carbon technologies, and improved resilience through decentralised assessments, planning, and solutions - including nature-based solutions. #Sustainability #SouthSouthCooperation Datuk Prof Dr Mohd Faiz Abdullah, Ahmad Afandi, Jaideep Singh, Arunabha Ghosh, Rishabh Jain, Ganesh Dileep, Ayesha Dash
