Environmental Design Solutions [EDS] is a sustainability advisory firm focusing on the built environment. Two-day hands-on training on ClimateStudio at M.Arch Sustainable Architecture, SPA-Vijayawada studio! This training was incredibly beneficial for our 2nd-year master's students, giving them a deep understanding of climate-responsive design and building performance analysis. These skills are crucial for their careers, enabling them to work with advanced simulation tools and approach sustainable architecture with precision. Learning ClimateStudio will empower them to create designs that meet both environmental and energy-efficiency goals, key assets in the field of sustainable architecture. Committing to a Low Carbon Comfort and Cooling Future at #SACEF2024 The rising demand for cooling is reshaping the global energy landscape, threatening to delay our journey to net-zero. To tackle this challenge, USAID launched the "Low Carbon Comfort and Cooling Collective (LC4)"—an outcome-driven initiative aimed at reducing the carbon intensity of cooling through tangible actions at #SACEF2024. The dedicated session on LC4, witnessed policy makers from the South Asia region (Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, Maldives), large-scale public and private sector end-users (Indian Railways, NTPC, Taj Hotels), demand aggregators (EESL), development organizations (Clinton Health Access Initiative, Sustana Cooling India Fund), technology providers and industry (Carrier, Voltas), committing to the objectives of LC4: 1. Achieve 50% reduction in cooling-related emissions by 2030 and 2. Mobilize USD 1 Billion in investment. Shri Ajay Jain, Special Chief Secretary, Government of Andhra Pradesh, emphasized in his opening remarks that low carbon comfort and cooling solutions will be essential to achieving net-zero goals. #SACEF2024 Day 2 is a wrap! The day was packed with engagement, solutions and action as government leaders and energy experts came together to launch three major initiatives and two reports: - The Clean Energy Investment Facilitation Platform - The Low-Carbon Comfort Cooling Collective - The U.S.-South Asia Mayoral Platform on Clean Energy and Sustainable Cities - 'Energizing South Asia: Impact Stories' report - 'Scaling up E-bus Deployment in India' report In the first session co-hosted with the International Solar Alliance, discussions centered around the transformative potential of regional green grids and cross-border electricity trade. At the Leaders' Roundtable, experts emphasized the need for expanding regional collaboration across the clean energy value chain, beyond electricity trade. The session, 'Modernizing Distribution for Next-Generation Utilities,' focused on transforming power distribution using smart technologies, and in the session on decarbonizing public transport, experts stressed the need for regional collaboration, knowledge sharing and government support to accelerate e-bus deployment. The day ended with a forward-thinking session on how countries and institutions can commit and collaborate on low-carbon, super-efficient cooling solutions. The eighth Breathe-In Dialogue was held on 25 September 2024 on the topic ‘Indoor Air Quality in Schools’ as part of Cleaner Air and Better Health (CABH) project supported by United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The dialogue hosted Dr. Corinne Mandin from IRSN, Dr. Henry Burridge from Imperial College London and Dr. Radha Goyal from Indian Pollution Control Association and Society for Indoor Environment (SIE). Dr. Mandin shared important insights on indoor air quality in schools. She discussed common pollutants, their sources as well as impacts of window operations and cleaning products. She emphasized how these issues affect students' health and learning. Dr. Mandin called for indoor air quality regulations in schools and day-care centers, along with public awareness programs. Dr. Burridge shared data on how indoor air quality changes with seasons and weather events like sandstorms. He also highlighted the impact of activities such as fireworks and school reopening on indoor air quality. His research revealed variations in classroom ventilation levels across different types of schools. Dr. Goyal focused on common pollutants found in Indian schools and their sources. She suggested practical solutions and policy recommendations to help schools maintain good indoor air quality.
