#G20 #G20Brasil | How can G20 leaders accelerate investments in climate resilient urban infrastructure? Climate and weather-related disasters have surged five-fold over the past 50 years, causing over USD 250 billion in losses in 2023 alone. Despite the pressing need, investments in climate-resilient infrastructure remain inadequate. Only USD 85.6 billion in FDI was directed towards infrastructure in LMICs through 2020, a fraction of the estimated USD 1.5 trillion required annually to address infrastructure deficits. In a T20 policy brief, we recommend: ✅ Standardising #ClimateRisk assessments across LMICs ✅ Integrating #RiskAssessments throughout the infrastructure life-cycle ✅ Developing international design standards for resilient infrastructure ✅ Building the capacity of decision-makers in risk communication ✅ Transforming the infrastructure finance landscape 🔗Read the policy brief at: https://lnkd.in/gxG-bQZr Ahana Chatterjee Shreya Wadhawan Savina Carluccio Niladri Gupta Deo Raj Gurung Sana Dharani Sharmala Naidoo

#CEEWDialogues This Saturday, we were delighted to host ISIS at CEEW! We discussed how the Institute of Strategic & International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia Studies, Malaysia's pre-eminent foreign policy think tank, and Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW) can support the elevated comprehensive strategic partnership between India and Malaysia. As prominent Asian economies, we must come together to solve the challenges of the Global South, leveraging our shared - and different - experiences and complementary strengths. We explored ideas for joint efforts to support the realisation of bilateral priorities set by our two governments. India, Malaysia, and the Global South will need transition and adaptation finance at scale, strategic foresight and enablers for new and emerging low carbon technologies, and improved resilience through decentralised assessments, planning, and solutions - including nature-based solutions. #Sustainability #SouthSouthCooperation Datuk Prof Dr Mohd Faiz Abdullah, Ahmad Afandi, Jaideep Singh, Arunabha Ghosh, Rishabh Jain, Ganesh Dileep, Ayesha Dash

Can geothermal energy help India meet its rising energy demand? Our CEO, Arunabha Ghosh, discussed the potential for geothermal energy in India during the panel discussion at #ClimateWeekNYC, "The Geothermal Opportunity in Emerging Markets and Economies": "A 24x7 energy source such as geothermal energy, when harnessed responsibly and innovatively, could be effective in tackling India’s rising energy demand, and help alleviate the challenges of intermittency in solar and wind, to a great extent.” Swipe to see glimpses of the panel discussion with Varun Sivaram (Senior Advisor, Project InnerSpace), Mirik Gogri (Sustainability Investor, Spectrum Impact, Family Office of AARTI Industries), and Zerin Osho (Director of India Program, Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development) 👉 #RenewableEnergy #GlobalSouth #GeothermalEnergy

#CleanerAirAndBetterHealth The Bihar State Pollution Control Board in partnership with CEEW organised a training workshop on 'CEMS Implementation and Auditing Protocol' under the USAID-supported Cleaner Air and Better Health (CABH) project. The focus was on the effective implementation of Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS), aimed at enhancing the capacity of regulators and industries to monitor and reduce industrial emissions in real-time. Shri Prem Kumar, Hon'ble Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change and Co-operative Department, Bihar, gave a keynote address to participants, including regulators and industry representatives. The workshop provided insights and lessons from best practices for CEMS, including technology selection, installation, calibration, and transparent data sharing. CABH project aims to strengthen air pollution mitigation and reduce exposure to air pollution in India by establishing evidence-based models for better air quality management. #CEEWVoices Over the last month, our researchers have been invited to panels and conferences worldwide to discuss the latest research and innovative approaches by CEEW that shift sustainability from the margins to the mainstream. Here’s a glance at some recent engagements ⬇️ ⚡Everything, everywhere all at once: energy transition edition From expanding energy access to millions to promoting e-mobility and scaling up renewables like green hydrogen, India has an ambitious yet comprehensive strategy that is driving significant change. At the UNECE Sustainable Energy Week in Geneva, our Programme Lead, Gunjan Jhunjhunwala, highlighted that each of the multiple energy transitions in India draws focus on different aspects of making it just and inclusive. Our cities are growing, and so are the demands on their resources. This growth must be inclusive by reimagining energy consumption through promoting e-mobility, rooftop solar, and energy-efficient appliances; and creating more jobs and livelihoods by scaling up renewables like utility solar, green hydrogen and wind. 💰Strengthening transition finance How can we increase transparency when it comes to issuing sustainable finance bonds? Our Director for Centre for Energy Finance, Gagan Sidhu shared his insights as part of the panel, ‘Developing Taxonomy of GSS+ and Transition Bonds to Strengthen Sustainable Finance and Addressing the Challenges of Securing Greenium in India’. The panel was part of the two-day capacity-building workshop ‘Green, Social, Sustainability, Sustainability-linked and Transition Bonds (GSS+ Bonds) Training’ organised by IFC - International Finance Corporation, NSE India , and Climate Bond Initiative, held under the aegis of International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) in GIFT City. 🔋The future of energy storage At the CNBC-TV18 India Energy Transition Summit in New Delhi, Dhruba Purkayastha, PhD, our Director for Growth and Institutional Advancement, participated in the panel, 'Battery Breakthroughs: Shaping the Future of Energy Storage'. In an era of clean energy, battery technology is paramount. The panel explored advancements in battery management systems, their role in grid stability, electric vehicles, and more. #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #EnergyFinance #GreenJobs #CleanEnergy

2024 was the hottest summer. Yet, it may be the coldest in the years to come. Cities, given the population density and all the concrete and steel, are heating up twice as fast. We desperately need action to safeguard lives and livelihoods in our cities. It was great to be on a panel with Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE, Mayor of Freetown in Sierra Leone, Daniel Sullivan, Chief Resilience Officer of Cape Town, and Dr. Ashwin Vasan, New York City Health Commissioner. Kudos to The Rockefeller Foundation for organising this important conversation. Special thanks to Somini Sengupta for the very sharp moderation of the discussion. One thing is clear, cities across the globe — be it in the Global North or South, are all feeling the heat — quite literally. No one is fully prepared yet, but everyone is at a different level of preparedness and is learning on the way. Key takeaways: - Temperatures alone is not the complete story, don’t ignore humidity (and wind speeds) - Even in the same city, heat doesn’t impact everyone equally. Identify the vulnerable population (gig workers, street vendors, construction workers, people in temporary housing, etc) and their respective constraints; plan for their safeguarding accordingly - Short term measures (early warning systems, cold shelters, etc.) are in the focus, but long term measures (increasing green cover, evolving building materials, leveraging nature-based solution) are equally important to lower rapidly rising urban heat. - Money, mandates, leadership, and capacity— all four are needed, in that order, to respond to the rising heat stress. - In the Indian context, we need to include heat stress under the national disaster management to ensure availability of adequate financial resources in the wake of extreme heat stress episodes. While all this is needed, we need to wake up collectively to abate emissions at a fundamentally large scale. Otherwise, these adaptive measures will keep falling short.
