𝗔𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 We had the pleasure of attending a session on the Global Internal Audit Standards, presented by Doron Rozenblum CPA, MBA, CIA, CISA, CRMA, CDPSE, CCO, as part of our ongoing development within Kreston Global. This was an engaging and informative session, introducing the delegates to the significant impact that the new standards will have on the Internal Audit profession. 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗱: ⚡ A detailed overview of the 5 Domains and 15 Principles that form the backbone of the updated standards. ⚡Insights into the 52 Standards covering requirements, implementation considerations, and examples of evidence for conformance. ⚡A high-level summary of changes within each domain, offering clarity on what these changes mean for internal auditors, particularly the Chief Audit Executives (CAEs). ⚡A forward-looking discussion on the future direction of these standards and what to expect next. This session helped the attendees grasp the technical aspects of the new standards and also understand their practical application in the internal audit field. The framework will undoubtedly serve as a guide to further strengthen governance, risk management, and control practices. 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀: 𝗞𝗣𝗠𝗚'𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝘆 𝗡𝗙𝗥𝗔 The need to transition from SA 600 to ISA 600 becomes even more apparent when we consider the recent judgment by NFRA penalizing KPMG for deficiencies in its audit of a large group entity. NFRA pointed out failures in auditor oversight and mismanagement of component auditor relationships, issues directly addressed in the newly revised ISA 600. In its investigation, NFRA highlighted the lack of thorough oversight by the group auditor in managing component auditors, leading to poor communication and failure to address material misstatements at the group level. These shortcomings are not isolated and point to a systemic problem that could be mitigated by adopting a more modern and robust standard like ISA 600. Ｈｏｗ ＩＳＡ ６００ Ｃｏｕｌｄ Ｈａｖｅ Ｈｅｌｐｅｄ 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: One of the key benefits of ISA 600 is its emphasis on the group auditor's responsibility for managing and overseeing the work of component auditors. The revised standard requires group auditors to take a more proactive role in assessing the risks associated with the component auditors' work and aligning their strategies accordingly. This could have prevented some of the issues raised by NFRA in the KPMG case, where inadequate oversight contributed to audit deficiencies. 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵: The revised ISA 600 encourages a focus on material risks and significant components, ensuring that auditors prioritize areas that could lead to potential misstatements. In KPMG's case, NFRA pointed out that critical risks were not addressed sufficiently, which resulted in audit failures. By adopting ISA 600, Indian auditors could better allocate their resources and attention to high-risk areas, reducing the likelihood of such oversights. 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: As noted in the NFRA judgment, global investors are increasingly scrutinizing the quality of audits, especially when it comes to cross-border operations. By transitioning to ISA 600, India would align with international best practices, providing more confidence to foreign investors. The KPMG penalty underscores the growing importance of global standards in maintaining audit quality in a highly interconnected business world. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: NFRA’s findings also pointed to a lack of adequate documentation and coordination between the group and component auditors. ISA 600 streamlines documentation requirements and mandates better communication protocols, ensuring that both group and component auditors are on the same page. This would have minimized the risk of miscommunication and improved audit effectiveness in the KPMG case.
