Hey all! I had written this article 3 years ago, when I had just begun to understand the policy space in India. I am happy to know that it still finds relevance among people who are keen to learn about this fast growing space. I am reposting a revised version of the article here, as some of you have asked me about opportunities specific to the just transition/sustainability/climate action sector - you can find the list of orgs (known to me) operating in this space in India, as a separate section. PS: This sector is fast changing and dynamic. So, keep a tab on new entrants. You may add to this list of resources as comments to this article. Cheers! #publicpolicy #publicpolicyindia #highereducation #mpp #justtransition #climatefinance #sustainabilityeducation #publicpolicyeducation #indianeducation #climateaction #policyanalyst #policyjobs #policybooks #highered #policystudents #lawstudents #phdstudents #phdjourney #esgresearch #climateaction

NPoC's co-founders recently engaged in a stimulating discussion with Dr. Saji Gopinath, the Vice-Chancellor of Digital University, Kerala. Renowned for his advocacy in the realm of social enterprises, Dr. Gopinath shared invaluable insights from his vast experience, delving into the current ecosystem and exploring future prospects. We eagerly anticipate his guidance as we align our initiatives with the state government's broader policy objectives, aimed at transforming Kerala into a knowledge society. During our Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship (MGNF) tenure, we had the privilege of consulting with Dr. Gopinath on our policy brief document, "Policy Recommendations for Kerala's Skilling Landscape." His feedback and insights were immensely valuable. We are excited about the potential for future collaborations, building on this foundation of shared vision and commitment to advancing social impact in Kerala. Today, let’s delve into a crucial aspect of economic growth and inclusive development: “The synergy between a Skilled Workforce, Registered Workers and Technology” In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, leveraging both human capital and technological advancements is paramount for maximizing the potential of resources and government initiatives. During my tenure at Banaskantha as Mahatma Gandhi National Fellow I had the opportunity to collaborate with Geology and Mining, Industries and Mining Department and overview the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) annual plan under the PMKKKY (Pradhan Mantri Khanij Kshetra Kalyan Yojana) Scheme for DMF Banaskantha. The maximum allocation of funds is done for the High Priority areas like the Children, Health, Education and Skill Development. Banaskantha has rich mineral reserves including limestone, marble, granite, building stone and china clay. It accounts for almost the entire marble reserves (99.3%) of Gujarat and contributes about 15% to the total production of limestone in the state. Visited the Mining site of Daanta block for Granite under the Pehman Village of Banaskantha. The shocking information that I received during the field visit was the number of deaths and injuries that takes place in these sites. The high altitude of these mountains, the giant machines that operates here, the extreme heat during summers along with the drilling and blasting that takes place at the site makes it extremely hazardous working condition. This leads to the importance of a skilled workforce that forms the backbone of any successful economy. They are the architects of progress, shaping industries, and propelling nations forward. Targeted programs can ensure that marginalized communities have equitable access to education, training, and employment opportunities, fostering inclusive growth that leaves no one behind. Formal employment plays a pivotal role in mitigating the risks associated with hazardous work conditions and providing essential insurance services to workers. Here’s why it’s crucial: 1. Safety Standards and Regulations 2. Access to Training and Education 3. Insurance Coverage 4. Legal Protections and Remedies 5. Social Welfare Programs True progress involves ensuring that benefits are spread across all segments of society, particularly those who are marginalized or economically disadvantaged. Simply measuring growth by GDP or the size of the economy doesn’t capture the full picture of well-being and inclusivity. It’s about creating opportunities and improving the quality of life for everyone, not just a select few. #WorkersRight #LaborRights #FairWages #EmployeeAdvocacy #WorkplaceEquality #LaborSolidarity #UnionStrong #WorkerEmpowerment #SocialJustice #WorkerSafety #WorkerWellness #WorkerSupport #WorkforceDevelopment #EqualOpportunity #LivingWage

In a country with 140 Crore + people with 17.5% of the world population, In the last seven decades, the share of the working age population has grown from 50% to 65%. With this facts it is difficult to rely on handful of the top institutions like IIM and IITs to take the sole responsibility of providing employment opportunities and cater to the needs of industries and the job market. Most of the new jobs that will be created in the future will be highly skilled and lack of skill in the Indian workforce is a major challenge. India may not be able to take advantage of the opportunities, due to a low human capital base and lack of skills. Only a limited 0.0017857142857143% of the Indian population make it to the top institutions. Hence comes the role of ITI (Industrial Training Institutes) Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship program gave me the exposure to the extensive academic + practical learning that takes place at the ITI’s. The vast list of sectors and job roles covered is commendable. Yet we still need to be focusing on market relevant skill development for the rising industries eg, Green Energy, Information Technology etc. With multiple in depth interaction with various industrial associations it seems there is a lack of collaboration between the industries and ITI. We need to actively engage multiple stakeholders from the Government of the State and Centre, Educational Institutions, Training Partners, Recruitment at the industries along with the international organisations for maximum benefit of the students to find relevant opportunities. One thing which was commendable during the interaction with students of ITI’s is their vision, dedication and problem solving ability, I am confident with the right opportunity and training these students will actually make India the developed nation we all aspire to be. They are the driving force to make India the 3rd largest economy in the future. To everyone reading this please do visit the nearest ITI once and take their inputs also provide your valuable suggestions to them.
