Driving growth by preventing bugs & regression | Founder CEO of Bugasura & Moolya

Public apology to Sharmad Naik for making him work during Diwali + Don't schedule work around festivals. Back in 2006, the industry was less corrupted. I mean, it didn't have terms like shift left and shift right. It only had - "they code - you test - we fix bugs - we retest and then we release". In that era, Sharmad was a budding passionate developer and I was his counterpart in testing, a budding passionate tester. We both were part of a team that built a media player for a Windows phone. Sharmad was part of encoder / decoder and I was testing it. Before me joining this team - they had been up and running. I bring in lateral out of the box to testing and my manager let me lose. He let me bring out my lateralness while others were focused on executing test cases that had been reviewed and approved. I had a background in testing audio and video codecs and wanted to build holistic coverage of all container formats, encoding, edge cases and corrupt file repository. I created a battery of test data focusing on the coverage and ran them through the app we were building. Some of them led to decoder crash. I reported the bug and proceeded towards my testing. I got my high when the bugs were accepted as valid and marked critical. Devs fixed - I retested and verified the fix. I then lost my highs as no new critical bugs were reported. Diwali was fast approaching and people were getting busy to travel to their hometown or just planning a good time with their family. I wasn't focusing too much on Diwali. I was focusing on the new low I had hit. My fireworks was in testing and not in Diwali. I happened to sit through - study the bug fixes and focused my testing sessions towards creating new test data and writing new tests that helps finding more decoder and app crashes. I found various standards, various tools, various real time scenarios, various bitrate files, various conversion formats - expanding my previous test coverage. Boom boom! Fireworks happened. Just 3 days before Diwali, I logged a few bugs and leadership deemed them critical and tasked Sharmad to finish it within a deadline. Sharmad lost his Diwali and I was at home - unable to celebrate. I gave him a call that morning - he was sitting in office fixing bugs when the whole country was celebrating. I asked him if I should join him at office and he laughed and said "at least you celebrate it". I couldn't. After Sharmad came back from comp off - I went and shared all my test data with him and other developers and focused on bug prevention than bug detection. My high of logging bugs after dev complete disappeared. My joy of preventing bugs before dev complete kicked in. Although I have apologised to Sharmad in the past, I also realised I didn't resist management telling Sharmad to work during a festival. As Diwali approaches - I am hoping in all your offices, in all your projects, in all of Moolya, people are not scheduling work on Diwali. Happy Diwali to you all.

Driving growth by preventing bugs & regression | Founder CEO of Bugasura & Moolya

The story of Pinky Jayaprakash to read on a rainy day in Bangalore with a coffee in one hand. Chapter 1 : Someone was impersonating her Over the last 5 years, I have logged into Naukri portal as an employer, once. I spent a max of 30 minutes on it. I was searching for a few profiles related to what I wanted to hire for and accidentally chanced upon Pinky's profile. She was the Founder CEO of SkEdu and her profile was up there. I went to her profile on Linkedin and saw that she had given a TedX talk and I thought someone is impersonating her on Naukri. Decided to give the number listed a call to see if someone is doing it or it was truly her. I called up - a lady picked the call, I introduced myself and told the lady - who pretended to be Pinky - that her profile was in Naukri under actively looking and if she knew it. She said yes - it was a conscious call. Chapter 2 : She had found a job I was super impressed with her profile and was curious to bring her on board to Moolya and pitched an opportunity. She heard me patiently and said she had just picked up a good assignment and had no plan to go through another series of interviewing to find another assignment. She politely said, "Good to know you, let's stay in touch". Sounded very typical. She was also part of Headstart and Bugasura was hosting one of the pre-events and I happened to invite her to our office. She wasn't sure but then she turned up. Chapter 3 : She came on board Apparently a few things weren't working out for her and she really wanted to interview with us after discovering the culture of Moolya and Bugasura. I interviewed her and heard her startup story. She had bootstrapped - made decisions and paid the price. She was brave and energetic. It was an easy decision to make. Chapter 4 : She was lost & found She wasn't sure what role would suit her. I expected her to shadow me and do CEO stuff. Everyone has "think" stuff and "do" stuff. So does a CEO. I thought she is great to compliment me on the "do" stuff. She felt lost initially. She tried - did brilliant at the mission given. Then one more. Then one more. She then failed at the next one. She felt lost again. A chat with her and a reminder - she picked herself up and did the next one brilliant again. She was beginning to see a great future with Moolya. Chapter 5 : She couldn't walk with me I do "walk the talk" meetings with people and she is the only person who I was very uncomfortable walking with. She would walk fast - walk seeing me talk and was fearing she would miss a step or two and fall down. She couldn't walk with me on the road but she did in my business. Her mission to success ratio is 90%. That's phenomenal. Chapter 6 : Today is her 1st work anniversary When I started 2024, I wrote goals for myself in my book. One of them - Hire more people like Pinky. The 30 minutes I spent on Naukri, the one call I made changed my business life positively. People like her make Moolya. Proud of you Pinky.
