OMI Foundation is pleased to share its position paper, “How to do nothing* about AI” and we invite your feedback. Why do nothing* about AI? “There’s plenty of room at the bottom.” – Richard Feynman In his 1959 lecture, Feynman highlighted the vast, untapped potential in exploring and innovating at smaller scales, referring to nanotechnology. Drawing a leaf from his book, we now need to carefully examine and manage the subtle risks of AI, emerging from the bottom too—hidden within the everyday systems we rely on. However, these risks might be elusive to regulators, making them difficult to address. This calls for a careful balance between allowing AI to fail and minimising harms. Instead of trying to prevent every failure, our latest paper advocates for a framework that allows AI to fail forward in controlled environments, fostering responsible innovation. The consequences of failure are real—especially in high-risk sectors—but with the right regulatory approach, these failures can become stepping stones to more robust and reliable systems. We invite you to join the conversation and welcome your feedback by November 4, 2024.
