We have opened a new office in Bengaluru, in the Ragi Gudda area in J P Nagara. Gives us an opportunity to expand our operations. We look forward to the blessings of the presiding deity of Ragi Gudda, Prasanna Anjaneyaswamy. We will be formally inaugurating the office with a pooja in a few days. It is always an added bonus to be surrounded by good food with some of Bengaluru's fine darshinis in the neighbourhood. Look forward to hosting folks at our office at Hubstairs Coworks Ragi Gudda.

In an X conversation, a question on popular place name suffixes in Karnataka came up. Sudarshan HS tagged Puranika Narayana Bhatta with a request for help with data. 30k+ towns and villages of Karnataka were analysed and the results are presented in some cool visualizations. 32% - Places with suffix ending in the popular Kannada word for village, ಹಳ್ಳಿ (halli). Interesting to see that these places have heavy concentration in the “Old Mysuru” region of the state. 10% - Places with suffix ‘Ooru’ (ಊರು) - literally means place in Kannada. Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, are well-known examples. One sees that this name is uniformly spread across the state. A town is called पुरम् (Puram) in Samskrita and its derivative in Kannada is ‘Pura’ (ಪುರ). Siddapura, Yallapura – are a few examples. Almost 10% of the places in Karnataka use this suffix; this suffix shows uniform distribution across Karnataka. Settlement of people around water bodies is a well-known phenomenon. Karnataka is no exception. Kannada word for tanks / ponds – ಕೆರೆ (kere) is quite popular for place name. 3% places, primarily in Old Mysuru region have this suffix. Some suffixes surprisingly are used more than one would expect: - ಕೊಪ್ಪ (koppa), numbering about 1.6%, centred around Shivamogga - ಕಟ್ಟೆ (katte), is a suffix for about 1.1%+ places. One sees an interesting trail along the way from Belagavi to Bengaluru of such places; perhaps, stages of stops on this important old trade route?! - ಕಾವಲು (kavalu), is a suffix for about 1.1%+ place names; these were places of deployment of guards / look-outs, concentrated in Old Mysuru. - ಸಂದ್ರ (sandra), is a suffix for about 1.1%+ place names in Karnataka, like Mayasandra. It is possibly a derivative of ‘ಸಮುದ್ರ’ – possibly due to water bodies or as some say, waves of resistance against the British rule. Many well-know suffixes like Nagara, Palya, Kote, Pattana - have less than 1% presence. The team took great care to club together variants due to changes to suffix in kannada on ‘sandhi’ (joining of words). This was quite an exciting work for the Latlong Aaloka Analytics team. Look forward to hearing feedback. Also, do please write to us, on what other interesting topics should be explored! Rahul R Sindaghatta Pratima G

As Indian Parliament is set for an election for the post of the Speaker for only the 3rd time, our analytics team was curious to look at geographical spread of the constituency from which past speakers have come from. - Andhra Pradesh has had the maximum opportunity - Punjab follows in the next place - No speaker from some of the large states like Uttar Pradesh & Tamil Nadu More such insights are possible with Latlong Aaloka.
