For a large part of August, I engaged with internet governance stakeholders in Taipei across a range of regional convenings. Grateful and privileged to have participated in these important advocacy and movement building spaces in the following capacities: 🙇♀️Fellow at #DRAPAC 2024: Held over a period of 2 days, this was the sophomore edition of the EngageMedia-led conference that brought together young activists and advocates from the Asia-Pacific region, working for digital rights and a free and safe internet. Attended numerous panels, workshops, game demos, and roundtables that helped set the tenor for APrIGF; I live-tweet my key takeaways on this 🧵: https://lnkd.in/gdPGa-xM 🗣️Speaker at #APrIGF 2024: This edition of the Asia-Pacific Internet Governance Forum saw about a thousand participants who converged over 3 days at the NTUH International Convention Center to talk about emerging opportunities and harms of digital technologies and attempted to trace the contours of a meaningful multi-stakeholderism. I spoke at Association for Progressive Communications’s panel on Gendered Disinformation about the work we do at Point of View to include all internet users in the discourse. Watch here from 6:20 ⏯️ https://lnkd.in/gQYwiBqB ✊🏽Participant at Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development’s Roundtable on Digital Rights and Justice: Had the opportunity to connect with a bunch of badass feminists and spend two days mapping our collective strengths to forge stronger initiatives for digital justice together. 🎬 Also super chuffed to have attended my first #SundanceFilmFestival (Asia) and explore a slice of the beauty that is Taiwan🪻☔️

While the advancement of digital technologies has created new opportunities for innovation and empowerment, it has also amplified existing inequities and introduced new types of gendered harms. Basic issues such as access and safety for women and girls continue to persist, along with newer digital gender-based violence and harms. Advancing the digital rights of women, girls, and gender and sexual minorities, and building gender-equitable societies therefore, require a collaborative and coordinated effort across policy, research, and grassroots organisations. To deliberate on pathways towards gender-equitable digital futures, Digital Futures Lab and Point of View recently hosted an unconference, Feminist Futures Now, that brought together activists, organisations, and experts working with women and girls, queer and trans communities, sex workers, persons with disabilities, and in the tech, digital rights and policy space. Together, we're working towards a more inclusive and equitable digital future. Join us in the conversation, and share your thoughts on how we can bridge the digital divide and address gendered harms. Padmini Ray Murray (PhD, University of Edinburgh) is a Course Designer and Knowledge Partner at The Digital Everyday, a role to which she brings her experience of creating alternative digital spaces that challenge infrastructural and algorithmic violence. As a feminist researcher and maker, she interrogates harmful and worn design practices and invites us to think about more just ways of creating and co-creating. In TDE she unpacks what a feminist media praxis can look like, particularly in the context of AI, digital safety, archives, maps, and platforms such as Wikipedia. In 2018 Padmini founded Design Beku: a collective of researchers, technologists and designers who work towards making design and digital practice more locally rooted, contextually relevant and ethical. She also established the first degree-level digital humanities programme in India at the Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology. As a creative practitioner, Padmini creates new media work which reflects her research and interests, such as Darshan Diversion, a feminist videogame about the Sabarimala temple controversy; Visualising Cybersecurity (with Paulanthony George & CIS, 2019) about how cybersecurity is represented in the media; On Affecting the Archive (as the artist in residence at Serendipity Arts Festival, 2020). In 2021 she curated Smarter Digital Realities, working with 21 residents from India and Bangladesh about technology and the city, and performing Abhi.Neta Aayenge (as part of Last Seen). The background is a deep teal color with a grid pattern overlay, giving it a digital or technological feel. The top of the image reads "MEET OUR KNOWLEDGE PARTNERS!" in yellow text. Below this, the main focus is on Dr. Padmini Ray Murray. Her name is displayed prominently in white text, along with her title "Course Designer, The Digital Everyday". A black and white portrait photo of Dr. Murray is featured. She appears to be smiling warmly at the camera, wearing earrings and with her hair styled casually. A text box below her photo provides additional information: "Dr. Padmini Ray Murray is a feminist researcher, maker, and the founder of Design Beku."
