The Pranava Institute successfully conducted a workshop on deceptive design at DesignUp Conference 2024! More than 20 enthusiastic participants actively engaged in exploring the complexities of deceptive design and its impact. The workshop utilised activities from our "Design Beyond Deception" manual, equipping participants with the skills to identify and mitigate deceptive practices. 🌑 🌑 🌑 A highlight of the workshop was the collaborative exercise where teams tackled real-world cases of deceptive patterns and developed innovative trusted design alternatives. Over 80% of attendees reported gaining a deeper understanding of deceptive design and its implications, and many expressed interest in conducting similar workshops in their organisations and universities. 💡 💡 💡 On day 1 of the conference, our Co-Founder, Titiksha Vashist, delivered an insightful #lightningtalk on deceptive design, global regulations, and the crucial role designers play in building a safer, #trustworthy digital future. We were delighted to observe the enthusiastic reception of our 'Design Beyond Deception' manual among designers, product leaders, individual practitioners, design teams, and educators, who also expressed their intention to integrate the manual's insights into their daily work to tackle #deceptivedesign. Our sincere thanks to Shiva Viswanathan and Jay Dutta for inviting us to DesignUp 2024, to share our insights and learnings from our years of work on deceptive design, and thanks to the entire DesignUp crew! We participated in the INCLUDE+Art residency program and annual event in Leeds, UK! The residency hosted INCLUDE+Art fellows from across the world, including Titiksha Vashist, our Co-Founder, and Udisha Madan, an artist and designer we collaborated with for this project. Our project, titled ‘Exploring Digital Joys’ by approaching the idea of digital equity through the principle of diversity, sought to understand how young people in India experience joy online. By leveraging design as a powerful tool, we conducted a virtual participatory workshop where 15 enthusiastic young participants with diverse backgrounds shared their vibrant perspectives on various ‘digital playgrounds’ and their unique ways of exploring joy online. This inspired us to produce the “City of Digital Joys” #artwork, a vibrant co-created design output that captures insights about the #digitaljoys experienced by young people in India. We also had the pleasure of engaging with other extremely talented residency fellows. As part of a workshop, the fellows engaged with our output by sharing their experiences and perspectives on ‘digital spaces’ in the context of community, togetherness and well being. Udisha Madan also created a live sketch note, driven by a panel of inspiring and entrepreneurial women. Huge thanks to Alicja Pawluczuk, Ph.D . and Rosemary Wilkinson for organising this incredible residency and annual event! Shout out to all the INCLUDE+Art residency fellows Marta Grabowska, Aleksandra Pieńkosz, Allison R., Thomas Diafas, Alba Hernández Sánchez, Aldessa Georgiana Lincan and Samiir Saunders for their fabulous work. The 2024 UNESCO Youth Global Education Monitoring Report (GEM Report UNESCO) on Technology in Education has been launched! Based on insights from over 1,500 youth and students across 8 regions, the report emphasises prioritising learner needs and ensuring equitable and appropriate use of technology in education. The Pranava Institute hosted the UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report on Technology in Education Consultation for South Asian Region. Here are the key insights which emerged from our consultation: - Linguistic, social, and resource barriers hinder the equitable digitalization of education in South Asia. A more inclusive, multi-stakeholder approach is essential to overcome these obstacles. - Effective technology integration requires a multifaceted strategy involving specialised budgets, state-level policies, innovative approaches and teacher training. Inclusive technology, such as accessible devices and AI solutions, must be prioritised for learners with disabilities. Addressing digital divides necessitates improved infrastructure, overcoming language barriers, and ensuring equitable digital access for all. - Participants emphasised the need for technology to support sustainable education systems and address multifaceted challenges. Policies should focus on community-building, decentralised solutions, and affordable financial options to empower young people.
