All Tech Is Human
Think Tanks
Together, we work to solve tech and society’s thorniest issues.
About us
All Tech Is Human is building a better approach for tackling thorny tech & society issues that surface values, tensions, trade-offs, and best practices. Our non-profit organization does this through collective understanding, involvement, and action around our three key workstreams of community-building, education, and careers. We have created a unique agnostic network that unites stakeholders across civil society, government, industry, and academia. This directly leads to a more cohesive Responsible Tech ecosystem promoting knowledge-sharing and collaboration, illuminates pathways for a diverse range of backgrounds to participate, and is agile enough to move at the speed of tech. Our secret sauce is our ability to involve not only subject matter experts and influential change agents, but also a broad mixture of individuals typically left out of the process. This provides the ability to fully understand the impact of technology, diagnose its causes and potential pathways for improvement, and affect various levers of change related to policy, education, and workforce makeup of the nascent Responsible Tech ecosystem. Popular programs for All Tech Is Human include our Slack community of over 10k members across 100 countries, regular in-person gatherings (NYC, DC, SF, London), a large mentorship program, regular livestream series, and a popular Responsible Tech Job Board with a related talent pool of thousands, and our influential Responsible Tech Guide. Key areas of focus include Responsible AI, Trust & Safety, and Public Interest Technology. Together, we tackle the world’s thorniest tech & society issues and co-create a tech future aligned with the public interest. Join Rebekah Tweed in conversation with Arvind Narayanan, professor of computer science at Princeton University and the director of the Center for Information Technology Policy. He is a co-author of the book AI Snake Oil and a newsletter of the same name. Both the book and recent newsletter topics will be discussed, with a focus on the recent post, "Is AI progress slowing down?", which digs into questions about whether or not model scaling is dead, whether or not inference scaling is the next frontier, and why we should stop deferring to tech insiders when evaluating those questions. Tune in on January 30th at 1pm EST!

Today, our team launched Grant Guardian, a new tool built here at The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation that uses AI to help grantmakers and nonprofits streamline the grant application and diligence process. The philanthropic sector isn’t usually known for being the first to embrace innovation and new technology. But one of the most fun parts of the development process was to see how eager our fellow grantmakers were to help us shape the product and learn how AI was making things work under the hood! My colleague Hazem Mahmoud and I expand on this and other reflections from the Grant Guardian journey in the post below. I hope you'll take a look! (And another round of congratulations to Hazem, Valmik Patel, Nicholas Davis, Nick Trimmer, and Hana K. Awad on the launch!)

At the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, we’re always exploring ways that AI can respond to unmet needs in the social sector. While we most often look outward to answer that question, last year we also turned our attention inward, to our own operations and those of our fellow grantmakers. Generative AI is a well-known productivity tool, but we asked: what does that mean for a grantmaking institution like ours? We explored that question, and found an opportunity to create a product designed to strengthen philanthropic practices as a whole. After months of development and collaboration, we're preparing to launch an AI solution that will benefit both foundations and the organizations they support. Stay tuned. Next week, we'll share how we're reimagining what's possible when we combine technological innovation with social purpose. #AI #TechForGood

We need to reduce tech-facilitated gender-based violence. That's why I'm honored that All Tech Is Human is joining on as a community partner with the incredibly important Safety Showcase initiative. For those in the SF Bay Area, Alexandra Robinson, Stephanie M., and Katherine Townsend of UN Population Fund's tech and gender violence online team will be in SF next week to meet with those working on developing these tools, and with organizations that are looking to expand understanding and practices around tech-facilitated gender-based violence. Do you know an individual or org that should be involved? Let me know (or tag them here). In particular, outside of meetings, we are looking into setting up a casual gathering next Tuesday or Wednesday after 5pm--so ping me if you are connected with an ideal office, bar, or restaurant. The team is also building a criteria for product designers, government procurement officers, and digital rights organizations to use in building and assessing a product for reducing TFGBV. This important work is being supported by the Numun Fund, UK International Development, eSafety Commissioner, the Australian gov't, and the UNFPA. #ResponsibleTech #AllTechIsHuman
