Business Solutions to Poverty
About us
TechnoServe works with enterprising people in the developing world to build competitive farms, businesses, and industries. We develop business solutions to poverty by linking people to information, capital, and markets. India’s economy has experienced tremendous growth in urban industries such as services and information technology. However, more than 300 million Indians continue to live in poverty, and of these, 75 percent live in rural areas. More than two-thirds of the population depends on agriculture – mostly at a small-scale or subsistence level – for their livelihoods. TechnoServe works with women and men across rural India to strengthen agricultural value chains, foster entrepreneurship in underserved communities, support sustainable local economic development, and promote gender-inclusive growth.

Strength, resilience, and leadership—women in agriculture embody these every day. From adopting better farming practices to gaining greater economic independence, they are shaping a more inclusive future and transforming their communities. Earlier this month, to celebrate #InternationalWomensDay, 850+ women across 10 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in Maharashtra came together to share experiences, exchange ideas, and chart their path toward financial independence and equal opportunity. Through insightful discussions and interactive activities, they reflected on the future they want to build, reinforcing the belief that real change begins with action. With support from the Walmart Foundation, TechnoServe has been working alongside these women to create lasting impact by expanding market access, strengthening financial inclusion, promoting regenerative agricultural practices, and empowering women as decision-makers in agriculture. Swipe to see their celebrations in action! #WomenInAgriculture #AcceleratingAction #RuralLeadership #FinancialInclusion #MarketAccess #SustainableFarming #WomenFarmers #AgriLeadership #InclusiveGrowth #TechnoServeIndia #WalmartFoundation | Nishant Gupta | Joydeep Dutt, Krishnan Hariharan, Elorika Tayal, Pragya ., Prafulla Kumar Behera, Ramya Palavajjhala, Oorna Mukherjee

Securing funding is a pivotal moment for any green startup. We at the Greenr Sustainability Accelerator understand this. Last week, we conducted a dynamic Masterclass titled 'Pitch Perfect: Building Your Investor-Ready Deck' to equip our cohort with the tools and insights necessary to captivate investors. Led by advisors from the Greenr team, including Siddhant Goyal, Kishore Athota, and Mohammad Azhar, the session delved into the anatomy of a winning pitch deck, understanding investor perspectives, and crafting a compelling narrative to hook investors with an apparent problem, standout solution, and scalable vision. The founders also received invaluable resources like an Investor Mindset Cheat Sheet, Financial Template, Valuation Worksheet, and Deck Template Outline. Supported by the IKEA Foundation and Visa Foundation, Greenr works with promising Environment Action Entrepreneurs in waste management, textiles, forestry, cleantech, renewable energy, and construction sectors in India to build resilient revenue models and world-class businesses. A large part of the program also focuses on women-led startups. If you run a green startup (or know one), and believe the program is ideal for you, apply here to enroll for our third cohort: https://lnkd.in/dRkqz8-Z Applications Open until April 16, 2025. ‘𝘋𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴, 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘵’ Sunita Suhas and Suhas Ramegowda, passionate couple-preneurs and founders of The Good Doll (TGD) started the company with this motto in their hearts. Originating from the Indian Yards Foundation, TGD uses upcycled, ethically sourced materials to make dolls that Indian children can relate to. They offer a thoughtfully designed range of fabric dolls, handmade from natural and upcycled materials sourced locally, minimizing their carbon footprint. Each doll includes a maker card, connecting buyers to the artisans. The concept behind the business is multi-faceted. First, many Western dolls that children typically play with do not resemble them, which can lead to unrealistic beauty standards. Nilah, their flagship character, is designed to capture a child's imagination and replace western characters over time. Additionally, around 90% of the toy industry relies on plastic for production. Finally, their intent was to support and create jobs for women from rural and indigenous communities in the spellbinding locale of Ooty, where the workshop is located. The startup has so far created close to a 100 jobs for women artisans, who come from the nearby villages. The women come from households where the typical occupation would be daily wage labor or farming. So, the income they earn from TGD has increased their household incomes significantly leading to better access to education for their children and better healthcare to everyone in the household. In addition to improving livelihoods, TGD has created significant environmental impact by saving over 15,000kg of textiles from being dumped into landfills. Karan Kaushik, Business Advisor with the Greenr Sustainability Accelerator Program, who was earlier associated with the business in a previous stint 3 years ago, shares: “The transformation I've witnessed over the years has been amazing. The team of women artisans has grown bigger, and they have become more confident, and proud of their work and themselves.” As part of its advisory, the TechnoServe Greenr team will work with TGD in helping them scale their D2C business by at least 30% and increase their presence in retail stores by 20%. TGD recently pitched on Shark Tank India Season 4! While they didn’t receive investment, they earned valuable feedback and encouragement from the Sharks — further proof that their mission is both impactful and necessary. Happy women’s day Eveyone And ….Yes! This is my first official recognition from the state government! As part of the Women’s Day celebrations, the Kerala Women’s Development Department organized several programs, including events, fairs, and various training sessions for women entrepreneurs. This competition was part of those initiatives, and applications were invited online. I became part of this event following the suggestion from the Kerala Financial Corporation. The competition was held in two categories: 1. Established Woman Entrepreneur 2. Emerging Entrepreneur In the first category, around ten women participated. Many of them are successfully running their businesses with low-interest loans from the Women’s Development Department. I was able to secure the first prize in this category. The award was presented at the International Ministry of Minority event held at Muscat Hotel, Thiruvananthapuram. I received the memento from Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. Along with me, Sandhya and Aparna Souparnika, the founder of Souparnika Wellness and my Facebook friend, also received awards. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the other inspiring women who fought through challenges and achieved success. This event also gave me the opportunity to directly learn about and understand the impactful initiatives of the Women’s Development Department. Wishing everyone a Happy Women’s Day! Earlier this year, TechnoServe President & CEO William Warshauer visited India to see firsthand how our programs are transforming lives. He met with smallholder farmers, women's farmer collectives, dairy producers, and Greenr entrepreneurs—all working to build a more sustainable and prosperous future. From farmers adopting regenerative practices to reduce costs and improve yields to dairy producers enhancing milk quality and incomes, and green businesses pioneering sustainable solutions, his visit showcased the deep impact of our work across agriculture, food systems, and green entrepreneurship. Each woman who paves a new path for herself isn’t just changing her life—she’s opening doors for others. In India, nearly one of every two self-employed farmers is a woman, yet they often face limited access to resources and decision-making power. In India, TechnoServe works with over 30,000 smallholder women farmers across agriculture and dairy, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to improve their production, increase incomes, and build stronger communities. As we approach International Women’s Day, we celebrate women farmers who are breaking barriers, creating opportunities, and driving lasting change in their communities. They play a critical role in transforming rural economies and strengthening our food systems. We thank Walmart Foundation, L'Oréal, Syensqo, Procter & Gamble & Abbott for their support of our programs and in transforming the lives of women farmers.
