Water For People with the support of ITC celebrated the Global Handwashing Day under the ITC Mission Sunehra Kal Project, in the targeted schools of Kamrup District, Assam, through the engagement of child cabinet members, students, and other stakeholders. A workshop on the launch of Light House Initiatives Phase-II under the Swachh Bharat Mission Gramin 2.0 was held recently at Rampur Development Block in Kamrup Rural District under the ITC CSR. Celebrating Global Handwashing Day 2024 at Behora Tea Estate, Assam! On the occasion, the Tea Estate's Hospital Doctor Dr. Meghali Sonowal demonstrated the five steps of proper handwashing, while Mr. Alam, General Manager, highlighted its importance and launched a cleaning drive at Hospital site as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0. The tea garden workers contributed to cleaning efforts at the Estate Hospital. In Sheohar, the lack of WASH (Water sanitation and hygiene) facilities in schools was a silent barrier to girls' education. That barrier was broken by installing 233 new model toilets, equipped with gender-segregated and menstrual hygiene provisions. The impact was profound. School attendance among girls surged by 25-30%, and countless girls, who were once forced to stay home due to lack of sanitation, are now in school, learning and growing. In 2014, female participation in water management was limited. Fast forward to today, and the story has changed dramatically. By forming 1,220 Water User Committees, with over 80% of members being women, and training 12,810 women in leadership and sustainable water governance, women now take the lead in managing and maintaining community water resources.
