🌍✨ Last week, GAWA Capital's Transformation Team had the privilege of visiting India to witness firsthand the progress of our investees' technical assistance projects. We had the opportunity to explore three dynamic cities – Delhi, Bangalore, and Ahmedabad – where we met institutions and end-clients who are making strides toward a more sustainable future. One of the highlights was visiting WayCool Foods' natural farming project. It was inspiring to see farmers being onboarded to the project, embracing practices that foster sustainability while boosting productivity. 🌱🌾 In Ahmedabad, we visited Pahal Financial Services Pvt. Ltd. clients who are benefitting from cattle loans, bundled with innovative solutions like heat insurance for their livestock and biodigesters to improve energy efficiency. 🐄🔋 This visit provided invaluable insights into how impactful partnerships can drive meaningful change at the grassroots level. We return inspired and excited to continue working toward transformative, sustainable solutions that empower communities. 💡🚀 #Sustainability #ImpactInvestment #India #Agriculture #naturalfarming #Transformation José García Fernández Marta Juste Gutiérrez-Ambrossi Tamil Nadu Agricultural University Core CarbonX Solutions Pvt Ltd University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore G.K.V.K.Agricultural Research Centre,Bangalore

Report on Fruit Fly Infestation in Horticultural Crops of Chinthamani Region, Karnataka Date of Visit: August 2024 Location: Chinthamani Region, Karnataka Crops Observed: Tomato, Cucumber, Pomegranate, Custard Apple Extent of Damage: 20% to 30% of crop wastage due to fruit fly infestation Introduction In August 2024, a visit was conducted to the Chinthamani region of Karnataka, an area well-known for its horticultural crops. The aim was to assess the health of key crops including tomato, cucumber, pomegranate, and custard apple. A significant challenge observed during the visit was the infestation of fruit flies, which caused considerable crop losses. Observations Crops Affected: The fruit fly infestation impacted several horticultural crops, including: Tomato, Cucumber, Guava, Mango & Custard And. Level of Damage: Approximately 20% to 30% of the crop yield was lost due to fruit fly infestations. The affected fruits were either deformed or rendered unsellable, leading to direct financial losses for farmers. Reasons for Infestation Spread: A major reason for the proliferation of fruit flies in the region was identified as poor post-harvest practices. Infected fruits were often discarded near the fields rather than being properly buried. This practice allowed fruit flies to breed and spread rapidly, further infecting healthy crops. Environmental Conditions: The region experienced moderate to high humidity, coupled with fluctuating temperatures, which created ideal breeding conditions for fruit flies. Impact on Farmers The 20% to 30% wastage heavily impacted farmers' revenues. Since horticulture is a primary source of income for many farmers in the Chinthamani region, the reduction in both quantity and quality of produce affected their market returns. Interventions and Recommendations To mitigate the spread of fruit flies: 1 Proper Disposal of Infected Fruits: Farmers should be encouraged to bury or properly dispose of infected fruits, as discarding them near the fields facilitates the spread of fruit flies. 2 Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Adoption of IPM strategies, including a combination of biological and chemical controls, should be prioritised. 3 Use of Traps and Baits: Pheromone-based traps could be deployed to help control fruit fly populations. 4 Regular Monitoring and Early Detection: Monitoring crops for early signs of infestation and taking timely action can help reduce losses. 5 Training and Farmer Awareness Programs: Training farmers in modern pest control techniques and encouraging good agricultural practices can play a crucial role in minimizing infestation risks. WayCool Foods is hand holding the farmers as part of the cluster development program to assist them. #farmers #regenerativeagricluture #economicloss #fruitflies #cdp #chintamani #karnataka Sendhil Kumar N .

Transforming white-label manufacturing of packaged food products using technology & automation | Ex-McKinsey, TVS | IIM Bangalore

Packaging on demand – Why buy, when you can rent? The festive season is upon us - issues of peak demand are more common in these times. We are also seeing more on-demand needs being serviced now. Apart from private labelling, our Chennai unit of contract manufacturing, having multiple hi-speed modular packing lines with in-line quality checks, each able to operate on a different item in parallel, offers ability to pack a wide variety of staples and snacks, in a highly sanitized environment. Similar services available in Bengaluru also. Whether a large brand is looking for additional capacity for festive season needs, or a small manufacturer is looking to pack in world class facilities on a time – share basis (but investing on own is not viable, given their machine utilization will be minimal), both can take advantage of this service offering. The capacity and automation, is such that customer brings a large truck (25 MT or above) in the morning, the truck waits for a few hours (the trucker can take a regular break), while the material gets unloaded,, converted into retail packs of 1kg, 500g, etc., and loaded back on the same day, in the same truck. This saves a lot of time, and logistics cost as well, for the customer. Bookings at a stretch, for a few days are also possible. All that is needed, is pre-booking and a bit of joint planning to understand the nuances of the product and pack details. Just like an Airbnb, or Uber for consumers, this is a great capital cost saver for the clients, without having to compromise on quality for their consumers, or miss out on demand. It is the greener option too - use existing assets, more value for all! WayCool Foods

Alley cropping is indeed a valuable practice within WayCool Foods - Cluster Development Program, focusing on reducing insect attacks and enhancing crop health. By planting rows of #trees and #shrubs to create #alleys for agricultural crops, farmers can benefit from several #ecological and #economic #advantages. Join the Cluster Development Program - a 500+ farmer ecosystem. Alley Cropping Benefits: 1 Pest Repellent Crops: Native Marigold & Calotropis: These plants naturally repel pests, reducing the need for chemical pesticides. 2 Nutrient Fixing Plants: Gliricidia, Mulberry & Indian Coral: These species improve soil fertility by fixing nitrogen and adding organic matter. 3 Fodder Plants: Agathi & Subabul: These can be used as fodder, supporting livestock and reducing feed costs. 4 Additional Revenue Crops: Castor: This can provide an extra income stream for farmers by producing marketable products. This approach not only aids in pest control and soil enhancement but also aligns with regenerative agriculture principles, promoting sustainability and resilience in farming communities. #alleycropping #plantprotection #trapping #pestprevention #naturalmulching #additionalrevenue #regenerativeagriculture #cdp

Urad (phonetically sounds very similar to the Tamil Ulundu) originated in India, more than 5000 years ago. Urad dal is a very unassuming powerhouse – gets converted to many times its volume in form of batter, and is also a major daily source of protein. As part of our backward integration efforts, our team is ramping up our own pulses mill, providing  consistent supplies of urad dal for retail consumption, food processors like batter manufacturers, papad makers, etc. quality tested using our proprietary 'iGrade'. Tamil Nadu is the highest per capita consumer of urad dal in India – no surprise, given the amount of idli, dosa and vadas relished in these parts. Aptly, the mill is located in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar, also the birthplace of the illustrious Thiru. Kamarajar, among whose many towering achievements, was the mid-day meals program. A true role model for an unassuming personality with phenomenal impact on many. As a bonus, those who visit the mill can have a look at Thiru. Kamarajar’s house, present in one of the by-lanes of the old town. Spartan, well-preserved, and with a lot of historical photos. WayCool Foods

WayCool Foods - Cluster Development Program (CDP) includes a key activity called Annual Cropping Patterns creation. This process is developed by considering agroclimatic conditions, historical rainfall data, soil reports, and the major growing crops in a particular cluster. Cropping Patterns: Cropping patterns refer to the distribution and scheduling of different crops on a piece of land over a year. It reflects the agricultural practices and strategies used to optimize productivity and sustainability. Benefits of Cropping Patterns: * Improved Soil Health: Different crops contribute various nutrients to the soil, enhancing fertility and structure. * Crop Rotation & Diversification: This practice improves soil fertility and reduces pest infestation. * Weed and Pest Control: Natural mulching and border crops are used to control weeds and pests. * Year-Round Cultivation: Ensures continuous cultivation throughout the year, eliminating seasonality in agriculture. Examples of Crop Rotation 1 Leguminous - Non Leguminous - Leguminous: * Cowpea → Tomato → Sunhemp 2 Restorative - Non Restorative - Leguminous: * Horsegram → Cabbage → Beans These crop rotations help in maintaining soil health and ensuring sustainable agricultural practices. To join our Cluster Development Program, kindly reach out to us. #croppingpattern #cropschedule #croprotation #regenerativeagriculture #cdp
