Chi siamo
The Foundation Euro-Mediterranean Centre on Climate Change (CMCC) is a research centre on climate science and policy. The CMCC: - Integrates all studies on climate change and adaptation/mitigation policies - Promotes collaboration and synergy with international organisations, policy makers, and industry - Provides technical-scientific support to the institutions involved in the negotiation and international cooperation activities. CMCC produces thorough studies regarding climate variability, causes, and consequences, through the development of high-resolution simulations based on global models of Earth systems and regional models, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean area. CMCC's research assures the maintenance of highly reliable products and instruments, which are made available to the scientific community and to further studies on climate science and climate change impacts. CMCC maintains, checks, and develops numeric model simulations, which are used to study the effects of climate change on the following areas: economy, agriculture, coastal areas, marine and land environment, hydrogeological cycle, carbon cycle and human health.

A new study involving CMCC researchers Sergio Noce and Chiara De Notaris investigates how urban expansion and #climatechange can negatively affect natural ecosystems and reduce biodiversity. The study, published on the Journal of Environmental Management, highlights the importance of planning #urbandevelopment in a way that protects #nature and #landscape connectivity, which could come in the form of green spaces and wildlife corridors for example. Sea-level rise will continue to threaten ecosystems and communities in the coming decades. Even if we were to reach #netzero tomorrow, our past emissions have locked us into inevitable #sealevelrise due to the long term effects of global warming on oceans and the cryosphere. It is therefore essential to understand the extent of this rise and how to both mitigate and adapt to it. The publication of the 1st European Assessment Report on Sea Level Rise marks a critical milestone in this direction. In this interview on #ClimateForesight, Giulia Galluccio, CMCC director of ATEC, vice-chair of JPI Climate and co-lead author of two chapters of the report, and CMCC researcher Elisa Fiorini Beckhauser, walk us through the report, its significance and implications. "Harnessing AI for Hydrology: Enhancing Streamflow Predictions Across Europe" 🌐 CLINT – MedEWsa Webinar 📅 20 March 2025, h. 15:00 CET Hydrological models and services are essential for water management, flood and drought preparedness, and ecosystem protection. However, large-scale process-based models often struggle with local-scale accuracy due to the complexity of hydrological processes, uncertainties in meteorological inputs, and human interventions. This webinar dives into how state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) can enhance streamflow predictions across Europe’s diverse hydro-climatic and geographic conditions. Join us to explore how these innovations are shaping the future of hydro-climate services, enabling more reliable and accessible water management solutions, and strengthening early warning capabilities in a changing climate. #SaveTheDate | 🌐 CMCC Lectures "Resilience: State of science and practice" 📅 17 March 2025, 15:00 CET From climate disasters to infrastructure failures, resilience is no longer a choice: it’s a necessity. Consistent and evidence-based approaches to measuring it are more urgent than ever. However, the lack of academic consensus on methods of resilience quantification and applications, fragmented across federal agencies, creates challenges in coordinating responses and evaluating the effectiveness of resilience-building initiatives. Igor Linkov, a distinguished expert in risk prevention and management, will dive into the latest science and practice in developing standardized resilience metrics and models. Linkov will explore how these metrics can be applied across multiple federal agencies to improve coordinated climate change preparedness, response, and recovery at a national level. ➡️ The Lecture will be a unique opportunity to discuss the future of resilience management and its implications for effective policy-making.
