REPMUS 24 is ongoing in Portugal with testing and evaluation of the latest military technology and innovation. Together with our subsidiaries Fincantieri NexTech and IDS Ingegneria Dei Sistemi we are taking part for the second year running in REPMUS 2024, the annual military exercise organized and hosted by the Portuguese Navy, NATO and the European Defence Agency (EDA) in Portugal. In partnership with the Italian Navy's CSSN and partners Graal Tech Srl and WSENSE, we are testing advanced unmanned autonomous technologies in a realistic environment, such as the Multi-Mission MUS Toolkit, which is based on the Surface Advanced Naval Drone (SAND), and the innovative Unmanned Management System (UMS). Here we are in the mountains of the Sirdal region in Norway, working alongside our partner SASSAS . Fine-tuning the controllers is a crucial part of optimizing an autonomous system, as is developing the best strategy for effective navigation. The more tests we conduct, the more data we gather, allowing us to identify the optimal solution and address any necessary adjustments. We have now mounted the multi-beam echosounder. Our ultimate goal is 3D point cloud reconstruction, which requires precise navigation and accurate localization, a task that will be done in post process. The trials have been conducted with the optical fiber solely for testing and real-time monitoring purposes. Here are some snapshots and excerpts from the Multibeam echosounder and Forward-looking sonar acquisitions during the tunnel inspection. SPOILER ALERT: The X300 AUV successfully navigated a long, narrow, and curved path autonomously! Special thanks to our team for the great work!
Norway has welcomed us with rainy days, not enough to prevent us from hard working! A new challenging task, along with a brand new scenario, has just come and Graal Tech Srl srl is glad to be on the front line with SASSAS . The state of art shows how tunnel explorations are usually performed by ROVs. AUVs represent a cutting edge technology, with the main advantage of avoiding all the constraints that the cable carries along, both on the logistic and navigation side. On the other hand, it presents so many difference from a classic open sea navigation, also considering that some of the standard sensors cannot be used or may not perform well. #X300_AUV mounts a payload composed by 8 single-beam echosounder, a Fiber Optic gyro, an IMU, a DVL, a Forward Looking Sonar, a Multibeam Echosounder and 3 optic cameras for data acquisition. The first day has been spent setting up the testing environment and the vehicle itself, as well as the first elementary navigations and sensor acquisition. The days after, we started off with the real tunnel navigation. Time to face all the singularities that the real word may present, since it is the first time the vehicle sets foot in such an environment. La Tempesta perfetta !!! Ho avuto l'onore di partecipare al convegno del Polo Nazionale della dimensione Subacquea organizzato dall'#AIAD presso il Centro Alti Studi per la Difesa #CASD il 17 luglio. Presenze davvero importanti dal mondo della politica, dal mondo militare, dal mondo industriale e dal mondo accademico. Gli ingredienti sembrano esserci tutti. A partire dal luogo dove il Polo è nato, il #CSSN di La Spezia con sbocco sul mare e tutte le facilities necessarie. Il timing, con una esigenza concreta di monitoraggio a tutto tondo del pianeta mare per problemi legati sia alla sicurezza che all'ambiente. La benedizione del mondo politico, il ministro #Musumeci faceva notare come il #PNS sia sponsorizzato oltre che dal suo ministero della politiche del mare anche dal ministero della difesa e dal ministero dell'Università e della Ricerca. La direzione dei lavori, affidata al direttore della struttura operativa del #PNS l'ammiraglio Cristiano Nervi che ha presentato il lavoro fatto e il programma di lavoro dei prossimi mesi con una agenda davvero fitta. Le grandi come FINCANTIERI e Leonardo Electronics che avvallano l'iniziativa e almeno all'apparenza si stringono la mano. Il mondo accademico rappresentato da tanti poli universitari che si occupano di applicazioni sottomarine, una tra tutte #ISME E poi ci siano noi #PMI, che desiderano mettere in gioco le proprie competenze, fornire le proprie tecnologie e lavorare su progetti innovativi per arricchire il sistema Italia. Vediamo se uno sforzo delle grandi riesce davvero a far esprimere al meglio le piccole in uno scenario dove vincono tutti. Some snapshots about last week sea trial. Our #X300 AUV is equipped with 4 single beam echosouder, mounted on the vehicle's left and right side. The aim was testing the new echosounder-based control strategy, which allows the vehicle to navigate through narrow paths like undewater tunnel and channel, following their direction without colliding with the walls. A really challenging scenario that differs a lot fron a classic underwater navigation in the open sea, and where many of the standard sensor may not be used. The payload consists also in a forward looking sonar for obstacle detection and avoidance, as well as a multibeam echosounder and a camera for data collection. The DIGI4ECO (𝐷𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑇𝑤𝑖𝑛-𝑠𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑑 4𝐷 𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑜𝑓 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑛 𝑓𝑖𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑦 𝑑𝑒𝑝𝑙𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠) project's 𝐤𝐢𝐜𝐤-𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 took place between 📅 March 19th and 21st, 2024, at the Institut de Ciències del Mar - CSIC , and was a big success! 🚀 This exciting hybrid event brought together 18 partners from 10 different European countries, alongside the EC’s Project Officer. The meeting featured interesting presentations and insightful discussions about the project’s plans and its early steps. DIGI4ECO is on a mission to fight climate change and help manage how we use our oceans, all through the power of data. The plan? To take advantage of unused data and make it easy for everyone to use. We're creating new tools to organize and check this information, ensuring it's reliable and useful for researchers, decision-makers, and businesses. By testing these tools in real-world sea monitoring, we'll set new standards for how marine data is collected and used. Our goal is to make these resources freely available, so their benefits can keep growing, even after our project wraps up!
