In Lebanon, movement has become extremely challenging due to ongoing bombings and rising instability. Despite severe logistical obstacles, we have managed to provide assistance to 25,000 people. A total of 109 staff members have been forced to leave their homes, experiencing firsthand the hardship faced by the communities we support. In response, we have initiated emotional support sessions at our bases in the Bekaa Valley and the South, offering a safe space to process the traumas caused by this conflict.

Assistance & Protection in humanitarian emergencies
Chi siamo
INTERSOS is an independent, non-profit organization which, through its own humanitarian operators, intervenes to effectively answer the needs of people in serious crises situations, mainly in the world's poorest regions, who are suffering, deprived of rights, dignity and essentials goods. It maintains a flexible operating structure. The head office in Italy coordinates, supports and monitors the planned activities in the countries of intervention carried out by decentralised offices. The statutory bodies of INTERSOS, are: the Members Assembly, the Council, the Society for Auditing and Certification of Accounts. Intersos, established in 1992, is recognised by the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the European Commission and the principal UN agencies; it is privileged to hold an advisory status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). OUR MISSION • To give an immediate response in humanitarian crises by bringing emergency relief to the victims of armed conflict, drought, famine, the presence of landmines or unexploded devices, and other disaster situations. • At the same time as providing primary emergency relief, to also begin working to promote a return to normal living conditions, the resumption of dialogue and the strengthening of peace, reconstruction and growth. • To stimulate, encourage and involve Italian society in helping to develop and spread the existing culture of solidarity and international justice. This is what remains of the building where our Tyre office was located, which we left for security reasons a few months before it was destroyed in continued indiscriminate bombing of entire neighbourhoods and towns in South Lebanon. We have been working in Tyre and the South of Lebanon since 2006, and although nothing compares to the loss of human life, losing the place that our teams shared for many years is heartbreaking to us all. Nowadays, over 100 of our staff and their families are displaced by the war. The anxiety and uncertainty over what they will find once they return to their homes is difficult to describe. Civilians and civilian infrastructure, including humanitarian workers, must always be protected in accordance with International Humanitarian Law. #ceasefirenow

What is the "ghetto" of Borgo Mezzanone? Despite existing for over twenty years in southern Italy, in Apulia, this “non-city” is relatively unknown. When it does make the news, it is often due to fires or accidents in the shacks, that have sometimes taken the lives of those who live there. In Foggia, we asked our colleagues on the ground to shed light on this vast informal settlement, which, during the summer tomato harvesting season, becomes home to around 3,000 people. https://lnkd.in/dRthrNPz

We're proud to have participated in the Crisis Management Centre's Annual Conference, where we talked about the technology behind humanitarian response and how we can balance digital transformation with the changing demands brought about by climate change. https://lnkd.in/d_eQWnGm
What a conference! At today's Crisis Management Centre Annual Conference we saw examples of government and NGO crisis response, first responder operations and the tech that makes crisis response work. Our huge thanks to our keynote speakers: 👩💼 Tess Ewington from Central Crisis Command (3C) at the UK Home Office who pushed us to consider preparedness as a crucial component to any good response organisation and asked us if it is right to keep responding when we know we need to make changes to our systems. 👨💼 Filipe Louraço Costa from INTERSOS - Humanitarian Organization who talked about the technology behind humanitarian response, and how we might balance digital transformation with the changing demands created by climate change. It is wonderful to be at the intersection of such practice and know that our research and projects are helping us find solutions to real problems. Thanks to our audience for participating as well - your questions were wonderful! 🔥 Pavel Albores-Barajas Oscar Rodríguez-Espíndola Dr. Hossein Zarei Dr David J. We are horrified to see the intensity of violence in Gaza and Lebanon continuing. Over the past 24 hours over 140 people were killed by Israeli bombing of residential buildings in Gaza, and over 60 people in Bekaa Valley of Lebanon. This comes on top of the continued indiscriminate bombing and destruction of entire civilian neighbourhoods and towns in South Lebanon, along with the use of phosphorous munitions that is rendering the areas uninhabitable and inaccessible to aid workers. Civilians are not a target. #ceasefirenow

They call it an emergency, but the numbers tell a different story. In 2023, just over 23,000 unaccompanied foreign minors arrived in Italy, slightly more than the year before. Yet, these young people continue to be treated as if they were part of a crisis, with new laws that undermine their rights and put their well-being at serious risk. In the 2024 Immigration Statistical Dossier, presented today by Centro Studi e Ricerche IDOS and to which we have contributed, we reiterate the need for policies that put the protection of migrant children first. https://lnkd.in/dnhqABcb

Without UNRWA’s ability to continue providing life-saving humanitarian assistance and other services, the unprecedented levels of suffering of the population of Gaza will become even more catastrophic. The world and the UN must urgently stand by UNRWA and protect it from implementation of this bill. Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale

We call on world leaders to act urgently to protect UNRWA from the unprecedented and dangerous attacks it faces from the Israeli Government. The Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee passed two bills on 6 October 2024 aimed at ceasing UNRWA’s operations. This could see UNRWA evicted from premises it has held for over 70 years and have its immunities revoked, severely blocking its ability to provide essential services such as healthcare and education to millions of Palestine refugees. This reckless move threatens to dismantle the backbone of the international humanitarian operation in Gaza, aggravating an already catastrophic crisis. https://lnkd.in/d3sytBRC

Although global vaccination efforts have dramatically decreased polio cases worldwide, the virus still poses a threat, especially in the contexts of conflicts and instability. In Gaza, polio came back in the past year while relentless bombing is disrupting the vaccination plans, leaving the youngest population defenseless against a preventable disease. In Yemen and Afghanistan, where polio continues to pose a threat due to fragile health systems, our teams carry out vaccination programs targeting the most vulnerable communities in remote and hard-to-reach areas where the disease continues to spread. #WorldPolioDay https://lnkd.in/dW2EQjWK
