Association of the Mediterranean Transmission System Operators
Chi siamo
Med-TSO is the Association of the Mediterranean Transmission System Operators (TSOs) for electricity, operating the High Voltage Transmission Networks of 19 Mediterranean Countries. It was established on 19 April 2012 in Rome as a technical platform that, using multilateral cooperation as a strategy of regional development, could facilitate the integration of the Mediterranean Power Systems and foster Security and Socio – economic Development in the Region. Our mission is to support all the institutional initiatives aiming at facilitating the creation of a Mediterranean energy market, by fostering the development of an integrated, secure and sustainable regional electricity transmission grid. We intend to be a professional and strategic reference body for every technical, market and policy issue related to the Mediterranean electricity system: a competent and proactive guide for European and Mediterranean institutions and stakeholders. Med-TSO members share the primary objective of promoting the creation of a Mediterranean energy market, ensuring its optimal functioning through the definition of common methodologies, rules and practices for optimizing the operation of the existing infrastructures and facilitating the development of new ones. Had a great week in the Gulf region this past week, engaging with EPRI members and other stakeholders in the region and from across the world. Highlights included: - The GCC Interconnection Authority ( GCCIA ), EPRI, Med-TSO and GO 15. Reliable and Sustainable Power Grids Net Zero Forum. Lots of great discussions around policies, technologies and latest experiences around how to get the region and the world to net zero - I had the opportunity to moderate a panel on Grid Operations and Planning for net zero- lots of great discussions around interconnection, flexibility, stability and the need for integrated planning. Lots of great takeaways and insights from a range of panelists leading planning and operations in the region - Visits with EWEC, Principal Buyer | Saudi Power Procurement Company, NEOM and Saudi Electricity Company, where we had the opportunity to discuss ongoing and future collaborations across planning, protection , markets and operations. - Had the opportunity to hang out with old friends and new and hear the latest ideas and issues they are facing. Lumi A., Ali A. Al-Heji, Vera Silva, Bruce Smith, Moayad Al Kadhem, as well as countless others - always great to see you! The challenges in the region are similar to those faced elsewhere in the world, though the pace of change being planned in the Gulf is as or more aggressive as anywhere I’ve seen. It’s an exciting time to be engaged there and with utilities across the world on the energy transition!

🌍 Shared Commitment to Clean Energy Transition in the Gulf 🌍 Just returned home from an amazing few days in the Gulf Region as part of the POWERING THE FUTURE TOWARD NET ZERO Forum, hosted by EPRI, GCC Interconnection Authority ( GCCIA ), GO15, and Med-TSO. My biggest take-away is a Shared Commitment – commitment to the clean energy transition, commitment to collaboration, and commitment to meeting the aggressive goals in place through action. During the forum, I had the pleasure to engage with leaders in the region and learn about just some of the ambitious goals and actionable plans on the journey to a clean energy system. Not so different from my recent post about Brazil, this region of the world is not only focused on decarbonization of the electric system – but understanding the value chain of decarbonizing an entire energy economy – the value proposition of fuels – and how every technology option must be on the table to realize that future. Special thanks to panelists H.E. Eng. Khalid Almehaid, H.E. Eng. Ahmed Al Kaabi, Tarik Hamane , H.E. Eng. Mohamed Al Braiki, H.E. Eng. Abdulaziz Al Shidhani, Dr. Jens Madrian, Eng. Riyadh Alomair, and Dr. Ali Al-Shaikhi. Our team at EPRI just wrapped up a two-day international forum, in collaboration with GCC Interconnection Authority ( GCCIA ), GO 15. Reliable and Sustainable Power Grids. and Med-TSO, on “Powering the Future Toward Net Zero,” focused on the need for collaboration and transformation to meet net zero and bringing regional learnings to the broader global energy sector. I have seen the commitment of the Gulf energy leaders to reach net zero goals; the Gulf 2030 plan includes extensive deployment of large-scale solar, wind, and batteries. In my keynote address I emphasized the importance of leveraging today’s proven technologies like renewables and storage, while also pioneering tomorrow’s Clean Firm Energy (CFE) technologies such as Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) and gas with Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS). This dual approach enables the Gulf to lead the global transition to net zero beyond 2030, and to export that knowledge needed by the rest of the world to reach global goals. With abundant mineral resources, world-class universities, and strong regulatory support, the Gulf can spearhead the next phase of net-zero advancements. Indeed, I challenged the attendees to develop ten new technologies across the region that after five to ten deployments could lead to 50. #LetsGo10 Distinguished conference guests included H.R.H. Prince Saud bin Naif and James Sindle Consul General U.S. Embassy, KSA who praised the GCCIA for its plan to link Iraq’s grid with that of the GCC as “a vital step toward greater regional interdependence.” (article from Arab News: https://lnkd.in/eWKn2ziq). Bravo Sankara for your great contribution at the panel session in Dammam, Saudi Arabia today. The 2-day high-level international forum "Powering the Future Toward Net Zero" organized by GCC Interconnection Authority ( GCCIA ), EPRI, GO 15. Reliable and Sustainable Power Grids., and Med-TSO discussed the challenges to meet net zero in our future power systems. Great discussions in your session about Grid Enhancing Technologies (#GETS), which embrace Battery Energy Storage Systems (#BESS) along with advanced reconductoring, dynamic line ratings and advanced power flow controls presented by your co-panelists Vera Silva, Adrian Timbus and Evan Pittman and moderated by Daniel Brooks. We will need all these technologies to integrate massively variable renewables to our grids in the future!
