One Works

Antanandava is a small, remote village in Madagascar where children and the elderly face immense challenges, including limited access to education, healthcare, and basic necessities. To support this community, WIP FOR PEOPLE and Medit srl have launched the DORA project: a vital initiative to build a school, infirmary, and canteen for around 120 children and the wider community. Our architects, michele pugliese and Luca Bonazzoli, proudly contributed to this meaningful cause through their sketches. Michele’s piece, Notes from a Journey Never Taken, explores the theme of the "windowless room" as a key part of community life, a space essential for sustaining homes and families which is often overlooked but ever-present. Luca’s work, Stepping Inside, complements this by imagining a space where the boundaries between inside and outside blur, symbolizing an ethereal realm that represents the human desire to rise above the burdens of everyday life. Yesterday, the preliminary auction featuring 18 artworks, including Michele and Luca's, was held to raise funds for the construction of the DORA Village. Why is it crucial to think, talk and plan now for the sustainable recovery of Mykolaiv in Ukraine? On 14th October, One Works will be presenting the UN4Mykolaiv Initiative during ‘The Concept Masterplan for the City of Mykolaiv' event co-organized by the Centre of Excellence on Sustainable Finance for Infrastructure and Smart Cities (ExSUF), established by UNECE and LIUC University, together with One Works Foundation. Guest speakers will discuss the response to the ongoing conflict through the #UN4UkrainianCities project, which reached out to international professionals specializing in integrated design and economic planning to define Masterplan guidelines for the reconstruction and urban regeneration of Mykolaiv. The main results of the international team working on the project for the creation of a new “concept master plan” for the city of Mykolaiv and other pilot projects will also be presented. Last week, One Works had the privilege of participating in the 85th session of the UNECE Committee on Urban Development, Housing, and Land Management at the United Nations in Geneva. The session focused on sustainable urban recovery in Ukraine, highlighting our work in Mykolaiv as part of the UN4UkrainianCities initiative. One Works Senior Urban Designer and Associate Director, Francesca Pintus, presented the latest updates on the Mykolaiv Concept Masterplan, developed in close collaboration with the Mykolaiv City Council and UNECE. Together with a global team of experts, we’re working on the city’s recovery through an actionable plan and five pilot projects aimed at transforming the urban environment. 🗣️ Reflecting on the project, Francesca Pintus shared: “For an urbanist, it is quite challenging to reimagine a city without seeing it. Cotton Club Sardinia: A beach club that feels like it’s always been there ✨ Here, our design does more than blend in with the landscape, it becomes the landscape. The organic-shaped basin of the pool curves naturally with the coastline, using a combination of local stones, aggregates, and resin that mirrors the textures and colors of the island. It’s so similar, you might mistake the water for part of the sea itself 🌊 Lightweight wooden pergolas shade the restaurant and lounges, while fabric canopies gently sway above the inviting bar, all crafted to encourage guests to fully immerse themselves in the surrounding views. Every detail has been thoughtfully curated with nature in mind. 📌This Friday at Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft, our Associate Director and Senior Urban Designer, Francesca Pintus, together with Chiara Nifosì, Assistant Professor at Politecnico di Milano, will be speaking on the complexities of co-planning and designing port-city interfaces. For centuries, Mazara del Vallo's Porto Canale has been the lifeblood of the city, once home to the largest fishing fleet in the Mediterranean. However, over time, this iconic area has experienced physical and economic decay. Now, the Municipality of Mazara is committed to revitalizing the Porto Canale and initiating a process of economic and social transformation with an investment of nearly €4 million. One Works' involvement in this ambitious urban development project is set to reshape the eastern bank of Mazaro river, blending tradition with modern needs and making Mazara a vibrant center in Mediterranean once again.   📍Some of the key developments include:  🚴♂️The creation of a 4.5km waterfront, connecting Mazzini seafront to Via Petrarca, specifically designed for pedestrians, cyclists and tourists alike. 🐟Redevelopment of the historic fish market at Piazza dello Scalo into a multifunctional space to accommodate local businesses, cultural events and gastronomic offerings.  ⚓Revitalization of the fishing and recreational boating sectors, giving a new lease of life to the city's long-established maritime identity.   Leveraging over 20 years of expertise in urban development of ports and marinas, we are proud to contribute our specialized knowledge to drive Mazara's future growth🤝 🔗 Learn more about the project here: https://lnkd.in/dPCFfBEq
