When Joanne first experienced incontinence after childbirth, she felt dismissed by some medical professionals. “If women are told that a ‘difficult’ birth is bound to make them a ‘bit incontinent,’ they feel like they’re making a fuss,” she says. “I can’t put into words the impact this condition has,” she says. “Before I go out, I need to know where the nearest toilets are. I need to have spare clothes, pads and antibiotics in case of infection.” The AMELIE team is dedicated to improving outcomes for patients like Joanne who live with faecal incontinence after sphincter injury. Hello Network, I am pleased to announce that the #BladderBowelHealth2024 campaign has launched today, and is available in every copy of The Guardian ! With the growing attention to IBD and pelvic health in recent years, this campaign will raise awareness around incontinence, gut health and pelvic problems, ensuring that the impacts of living with bladder and bowel conditions are fully recognised. It will also aim to increase public and professional knowledge of bladder and bowel conditions, exploring innovations in treatments, diagnoses and the management of different conditions and how they are impacted by lack of access to treatment across the globe.
