    Cardiothoracic Surgeon. Coach. Author. Speaker

Am writing this one with tears flowing down my cheeks. (Story and picture is shared with permission from the family). A few weeks ago I received a deeply touching message here on LinkedIn. A lady reached out in despair, her mom had been diagnosed with a heart problem 16 years ago, and all this time had not been able to raise the money required for surgery. Each year that passed by she got sicker. A few weeks ago her condition got so bad, death was knocking on her door. Her daughter, desperate for help did something truly incredible. She send out a message to every cardiac surgeon and Cardiologist in Kenya that she could find. She randomly sent out a distress call begging for someone to respond. I was among those who got her message. I replied and asked her to come to see me at Avenue Hospital. The moment I saw them my heart broke. This mama was so sick, hardly able to take a few steps without being breathless. "Nisaidie tafadhali",she said (Please help) Her body had all the savage effects of heart disease, but the thing that touched me most was the pain I saw in her eyes, pain from the fact that she was dying just because she could not afford surgery. "We have no money for surgery, but please help us", her daughter pleaded. Heart surgery is an expensive endeavour, but how could I turn away this mama? She had been waiting for someone to help for 16 years! 16 years of misery! When I saw the tears in her eyes I excused myself and went out of the room. I didn't want them to see my teary eyes. I knew we had to do something. I called the Cardiologist and explained the situation, he immediately agreed to offer his services at no fee. I called the anaesthetist who also agreed to charge no fee. Then I called the perfusionists, they all agreed to offer free service. Lots of costs still remained, the hospital fees and the cost of all the supplies that her surgery required. I called the gentleman in charge of the hospital administration and explained the situation, and the amazing team at Avenue Healthcare agreed to offer this life saving Surgery at no cost to the patient! I went back to the room and told them we would operate on her the next week, and that they did not have to pay a single cent. The mama was crying in disbelief, the daughter was teary in shock, and I was teary, amazed at the divine moment I was witnessing. This was why I went into medicine. Why I became a heart surgeon. To change people's lives. To make a difference. A few days later this mama was on the operating table, we opened her heart and repaired the trouble it had, giving it a new lease of life. We took this picture the day I was discharging her home, it means a lot to me. I saw her today in the follow up clinic. "Hata siamini", she said. (I still can't believe it) "Sasa ninatembea kabisa!" ( I am now walking around a lot!) As I watched her walk away today my heart was full. Even when we can't cure we can care, but oh what a privilege to offer both cure and care.

This year’s theme for World Mental Health Day emphasizes that ‘Mental Health is a Universal Human Right.’ Everyone, regardless of age, gender, or background, deserves access to quality mental health care and support. Yet, millions around the world still face barriers such as stigma, lack of resources, and misinformation. Let’s use this day to raise awareness, advocate for equal access, and encourage open conversations. Supporting mental health is about more than treatment; it’s about creating environments where everyone feels safe, supported, and heard #TheAvenueToGoodHealth #YourHealthcarePartner
