CIFOR-ICRAF led the launch of the Laikipia County Environment Action Plan (2025-2029)—an important roadmap for addressing environmental challenges and mobilizing resources for climate action. Developed under the 2016-2022 NEMA guidelines, the plan lays out strategies for financing and implementing environmental initiatives across the county. “We have worked hard to develop this plan, and now we must secure the resources to implement it,” said Leah Njeri, CECM Laikipia, highlighting the role of knowledge gained through CIFOR-ICRAF’s resource mobilization training. The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recognized CIFOR-ICRAF’s contribution to establishing a modern nursery in one of its barracks, emphasizing the shared responsibility of restoring landscapes and meeting Kenya’s 15-billion tree goal. Governor Joshua Irungu called for action: “We must protect our natural beauty while helping communities harness resources. This is more than a plan—it is a movement for environmental responsibility and resilience.” Financial partners, Absa Bank and UNISON Sacco, were also in attendance to explore funding opportunities that will drive impactful environmental action in the county. #UKPACT | Catherine Muthuri | Denis Wakaba | Robina Bosibori Abuya |

🎬 EcoCinema for Impact: Where Knowledge Meets Creativity This evening, CIFOR-ICRAF Nairobi, in partnership with the British Columbia Environmental Film Festival Society, hosted a special film screening and discussion on the role of film and storytelling in tackling environmental challenges. From the deep connection between Indigenous communities and salmon to Senegal’s fight against plastic pollution, Canada’s last roadless old-growth forests, and Sierra Leone’s innovative solutions to extreme heat—the films took us on a journey across the world, highlighting urgent environmental issues and the people working to solve them. The evening wrapped up with conversations and networking, bringing together filmmakers, policymakers, and environmental advocates to exchange ideas and inspire action. As our CEO, Eliane Ubalijoro, said: "Film has the unique ability to transcend borders, connect us to the realities of our planet, and inspire action in ways that facts and figures alone cannot." A huge thank you to everyone who joined us. Pezhman Hadavi | Jennifer Jackson| Michael Dougherty | Bruce Scott |

How much funding is flowing into Central Africa’s forestry and environmental sectors? A new update to the 2019 Observatory for Forests of Central Africa (OFAC) study maps the latest international financial flows, building on previous research from 2008–2017. Despite growing global commitments, Central Africa received just 11% of forestry and environmental official development assistance (FEODA) to tropical regions—a mere USD 2 billion out of USD 15 billion. With revised nationally determined contributions (NDCs) now in place, COMIFAC countries have fresh opportunities to secure funding. What has changed since the last analysis? For generations, Zambia’s Miombo woodlands have provided communities with a seasonal treasure—wild mushrooms. Now, thanks to the #Z4ABC project, these forest fungi are not only an important food source but also a source of livelihoods. Through capacity-building efforts, communities in Muchinga Province are learning to cultivate, process, and market mushrooms sustainably—tapping into new economic opportunities while preserving their forests. A forthcoming documentary, Nature’s Pantry: Mushrooms of the Zambian Miombo, captures this journey. In collaboration with PlanetFungi photographers Catherine Marciniak and Steve. Axford, the CIFOR-ICRAF team is bringing the story of Zambia’s mushrooms to the world. Co-funded by the European Commission's DeSIRA initiative and Finnish partners, the Z4ABC project is weaving together biodiversity, food security and economic empowerment— from the forest floor to international markets.
