Today, on World Water Day 2025, the focus is on glacier conservation. Glaciers are vital - essential for drinking water, agriculture, industry, clean energy production, and healthy ecosystems. They are the planet's water towers, holding about 70% of the Earth's freshwater in the form of snow or ice. This frozen reservoir feeds rivers and sustains nearly 2 billion people who rely on water from glaciers, snowmelt, and mountain runoff for their daily needs, agriculture, and energy production. But these vital resources are under severe threat. In 2023 alone, glaciers lost more than 600 gigatons of water, the largest mass loss recorded in 50 years. This rapid melting isn't just a loss of ice; it has profound global consequences. Increased glacier melt contributes significantly to global sea level rise, which is already about 20 cm higher than it was in 1900, threatening coastal communities and ecosystems. Protecting glaciers safeguards the delicate balance of our planet's ecosystems and ensures water security for billions of people. Supported by the International Affairs Bureau, Korea Forest Service and implemented by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification & the UN Environment Programme, the Greening Drylands Partnership combines reforestation with income generation, empowering communities to adapt to land degradation and drought and build a more sustainable future.
