Telling stories of progress across Africa. Founder, The Flip

Can solar power solve Nigeria's energy crisis? Fuel generators have powered Nigeria for decades. They're noisy, dirty, and bad for the environment. But they also provide power to millions of people in a country with an unreliable grid. The removal of Nigeria's long-standing fuel subsidy in 2023 caused the price of fuel to quadruple, leaving Nigerian consumers searching for options. And many are going solar. So while economic considerations have largely driven Nigeria's transition to solar power, it has positive climate implications too. But why is the grid so broken in the first place? How can it be fixed? And is decentralized solar energy an adequate solution to solve Nigeria's energy crisis? In today’s episode of The Flip, we’re exploring Nigeria's newfound energy transition. Featuring: Bimbola Adisa - Founder & CEO, Beacon Power Services Rotimi Thomas - Co-founder & CEO, SunFi Chidalu Onyenso - Founder & CEO, Earthbond This episode was produced as part of our series on climate action in Africa, The Greenprint, in partnership with Catalyst Fund, Delta40 Venture Studio, and Africa Climate Ventures. I've left the link to the full episode in the comments below 👇👇

Building and investing in innovative ventures that create jobs, improve lives and promote planetary health across Africa

Proud to have co-authored this 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭𝐁𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 piece alongside Christopher Emmott from Acumen and Audrey Desiderato from Mirova on the future of 𝐏𝐀𝐘𝐆𝐨 𝐒𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫 and why we believe the sector is entering a new phase of sustainable growth. After nearly a decade in the sector, I’ve seen firsthand how new markets evolve—moving through cycles of hype, disillusionment, and eventually, maturity. While PAYGo solar has faced significant challenges on the continent, the demand remains strong, financial models are improving, and investor confidence is returning. We believe that this is a pivotal moment for the sector to 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 through our collective efforts. Building and investing in innovative ventures that create jobs, improve lives and promote planetary health across Africa

In the face of aid and funding cuts across Africa, the Power Africa Summit #PAS25 in DC offered a candid and refreshing shift in perspective. Yesterday, I had the privilege of joining energy leaders from the USA and Africa for an insightful discussion on the future of the Energy sector. Here are my key takeaways: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐀𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥. The U.S. government is making it clear that Africa’s energy sector will no longer be regarded as a social enterprise (aid-focused) and will instead be about commercial investment. This important shift will create new opportunities for private capital to step in and drive sustainable, profitable energy solutions.   𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐊𝐞𝐲 We need to look beyond government-to-government deals and bring African companies developing solutions on the ground into the equation. What we must now solve is how to structure funding to make investments scalable and commercially viable. 𝐖𝐞 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐬 & 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐌𝐢𝐱 With the global push for cleaner energy, where does gas fit in Africa’s energy transition? Financing for gas projects is increasingly complex, but Africa’s industrialization still requires reliable baseload power. There’s an opportunity to rethink funding strategies to balance energy security with sustainability.  𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 Africa’s energy consumption per capita is just 153 kWh, compared to 10,000 kWh in the US! We need to co-create solutions that push this closer to 1,000 KWh to enable industrialization, manufacturing, and widespread economic growth. 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 & 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 For Africa to meet its $1 trillion energy investment need, we must expand who can participate. Every enterprise—big and small—should have access to capital for energy investments. Local capital markets, pension funds, and innovative financing structures can help bridge the gap. M300 which aims to expand access to 300 million people across Africa by 2030 is a step in the right direction. 𝐏𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜-𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 There are successful PPPs that are driving real change across the continent. We need to study these models closely and figure out how they can be replicated to scale across the continent At Delta40 Venture Studio, we’re fully committed to 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧300 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 & 𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 because we recognize the tremendous opportunities they offer for the continent’s economic and social progress. If you have ideas on how we can collaborate to advance these initiatives, feel free to drop a comment or send me a message!
