In this blog co-authored with Aubra Anthony Sharmista Appaya, and published by The World Bank, we discuss priorities for AI governance in Africa. We note that "the coming years offer Africa an immense opportunity to evolve from an AI consumer to an AI developer, positioning itself to play a key role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence (AI). But there is much to be done to realize this opportunity and ensure African participation in global agenda setting on AI." And what does Africa's 🌍 #AI ecosystem need to thrive? 4 priorities: 1. AI Knowledge and Talent 2. Infrastructure and Institutions 3. Data 4. Regional and global coordination Moving forward, there is a need to move from words to action in some key areas: ✅inclusion of Africa in Global AI governance ✅utilize a collaborative and pragmatic approach ✅a robust funding ecosystem: expanding financing options, paired with strong delivery mechanisms This blog is inspired by conversations at the "Africa AI Governance Roundtable: Bridging North-South Perspectives for Inclusive AI" organized by The World Bank Group, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Republic of Korea, Republic of Rwanda, and Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology during the United Nations General Assembly Summit of the Future Action Days.
